Contradiction in number of months for pregnancy, gestation, breast feeding and weaning in the Quran?  No contradiction.  It's up to the father of the baby!

The sections of this article are:

1-  Allah Almighty's Divine Claims in Noble Verses 31:14, 46:15, 2:233.
2-  Some of the Glorious Quran's STUNNING Scientific Miracles.
3-  Conclusion.

4-  Rebuttals.

1-  Allah Almighty's Divine Claims in Noble Verses 31:14, 46:15, 2:233:

Let us look at the following Noble Verses from the Glorious Quran:

1-  Babies breast feed for up to two years.  The period could be less.  This is clearly seen in the following "in  في" in the Noble Verse, which means within:

Noble Verse(s) 31:14
Yusuf Ali:

[031:014]  And We have enjoined on man (to be good) to his parents: in travail upon travail did his mother bear him, and in years twain was his weaning: (hear the command), "Show gratitude to Me and to thy parents: to Me is (thy final) Goal.

Arabic (Read from right to left.  Also, all png image files: [1] [2]):

31:14 ووصينا الانسان بوالديه حملته امه وهنا على وهن وفصاله في عامين ان اشكر لي ولوالديك الي المصير

2-  But what about the 30 total months here?  Doesn't pregnancy take 9 months, and the two years are 24 months?  Shouldn't the total here be 33 months?

Noble Verse(s) 46:15
Yusuf Ali:

[046:015]  We have enjoined on man kindness to his parents: In pain did his mother bear him, and in pain did she give him birth. The carrying of the (child) to his weaning is (a period of) thirty months. At length, when he reaches the age of full strength and attains forty years, he says, "O my Lord! Grant me that I may be grateful for Thy favour which Thou has bestowed upon me, and upon both my parents, and that I may work righteousness such as Thou mayest approve; and be gracious to me in my issue. Truly have I turned to Thee and truly do I bow (to Thee) in Islam."

Arabic (Read from right to left.  Also, all png image files: [1] [2]):

46:15 ووصينا الانسان بوالديه احسانا حملته امه كرها ووضعته كرها وحمله وفصاله ثلاثون شهرا حتى اذا بلغ اشده وبلغ اربعين سنة قال رب اوزعني ان اشكر نعمتك التي انعمت على وعلى والدي وان اعمل صالحا ترضاه واصلح لي في ذريتي اني تبت اليك واني من المسلمين

The following points are important to note:

(a)-  Not all pregnancies go for 9 months.  Some are shorter, and some on rare occasions go even longer.

(b)-  The Glorious Quran never once said that pregnancies go for 9 months.  This is because the months almost always vary between women.

(c)-  As we saw in Noble Verse 31:14 above, the normal breast feeding period is up to ("in  في") two years for the normal family.  So the period could go less in months.  This is further demonstrated in Noble Verse 2:233, below.

(d)-  The 30 months in Noble Verse 46:15 is Allah Almighty's Command for the minimum total months for the gestation and breast feeding and weaning periods.

(e)-  The 30 months are also Allah Almighty's picture for the son and daughter to help them picture the type of hardship their parents, especially their mother, has gone through.  We children often take our parents for granted way too much, and tend to forget the type of hardship that they've gone through to raise us.  So the 30 months here is a picture, and not an exact number, for the children to see in order for them to:

  • Thank Allah Almighty more and more.

  • Become more appreciative of their parents.

  • Start giving the best care for their parents, especially after they (the children) attain the age of wisdom, which is the age of 40 as mentioned in Noble Verse 46:15, above.
  • (f)-  The 30 months here couldn't be an exact unchangeable number figure here, because both the gestation periods and the needs of children for breast feeding vary.  Some are longer and some are shorter.  But parents, nonetheless, should aim for completing the 30 total months period.

3-  All of this is further supported in the following Noble Verse:

    Noble Verse(s) 2:233
    Yusuf Ali:

[002:233]  The mothers shall give suck to their offspring for two whole years, if the father desires to complete the term. But he shall bear the cost of their food and clothing on equitable terms. No soul shall have a burden laid on it greater than it can bear. No mother shall be Treated unfairly on account of her child. Nor father on account of his child, an heir shall be chargeable in the same way. If they both decide on weaning, by mutual consent, and after due consultation, there is no blame on them. If ye decide on a foster-mother for your offspring, there is no blame on you, provided ye pay (the mother) what ye offered, on equitable terms. But fear God and know that God sees well what ye do.

Arabic (Read from right to left.  Also, all png image files: [1] [2]):

The following points are important to note:

(a)-  This Noble Verse, 2:233, is speaking about the divorced parents.

(b)-  Since the father isn't around because of the divorce, then Allah Almighty recommended for the child to breast feed for two full years, if the father desires.

(c)-  Like in the other Noble Verses above, the total number here isn't a fixed number.

(d)-  So the breast feeding period could be shorter.

(e)-  But the parents, nonetheless, should estimate a total period of 30 or so months for the total care of the baby from the time of pregnancy to the time of weaning.  It could be longer if the father desires.  So it varies, and it is up to the father.  But the minimum should be, nonetheless, 30 months total.

2-  Some of the Glorious Quran's STUNNING Scientific Miracles:

Here are two must-visit sections that demonstrate some of the Glorious Quran's stunning Divine Miracles:

  • The Overwhelming Scientific Miracles in the Glorious Quran.

  • The amazing Prophecies of the Glorious Quran and Islam.
  •

    Quran's STUNNING Divine Miracles: [1]

Here are some of my favorite Stunning Scientific Miracles in the Glorious Quran from among the tens (10s) that are listed in the main sections, below:

1-  Here is one stunning Numerical Miracle, from the 10s below, for you:

The Glorious Quran has 114 Chapters. The sum of those Chapters is 6555 (1+2+...+114 = 6555). There are also 6236 Noble Verses in the Glorious Quran. Now, IF YOU ADD EACH CHAPTER # with the number of its Verses, then you get a list of numbers. So 1 (first Chapter) + 7 (# of its Verses) = 8. Do this for all Chapters.

1-  The sum of the odd numbers from the list = 6555.
2-  The sum of the even numbers from the list = 6236.

See the XLS file for 100% confirmation.

2-  The Great Miracle.  Allah Almighty in the Holy Quran called the Number 19 Miracle "One of the Mighty Ones (Miracles)" (74:30-37) [1] [2].  See the 100s of Noble Verses that clearly testify to this Great Miracle.  Also, did you know that Allah Almighty Said in Surat Nuh (that's Noble Chapter Nuh (Noah)) that Prophet Noah lived for 950 years among his people.

Yet, all Praise and Glory are due to Allah Almighty Alone, the entire Noble Surah is exactly written in 950 Letters [1] [2]!  You can thoroughly see this in the scanned images that thoroughly verify every single Noble Letter, in the links.  Click on the links to see the many other Numerical Miracles in the Holy Quran.  Also, see the Numerical Miracles section along with all of the other great sections.  Also, 1,000s of examples in zip & PDF (fonts) files all demonstrated in this article!

3-  19 X 115 = 2185 Number 19 and BASMALA Miracle.  The total numerical value of Noble Verses 74:30-37 themselves, which are the heart of the Number 19 Miracle, has a stunning Miracle in it.  The value of these Noble Verses matches the multiplication of the BASMALA's number of letters (19 Letters) and their total numerical values (115): 19 X 115 = 2185.  The Basmala, which full text in Arabic means "In the Name of Allah The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful" is the Key to the Glorious Quran.  It is recited first before reading the Holy Quran, and it is also obligatory upon every Muslim to start with the Basmala before starting any task.  Again, 1,000s of examples in zip & PDF (fonts) files all demonstrated in this article!

4-  Please also checkout the many hundreds (100s) of Great Numerical Miracles, and the many tens (10s) of other Great Scientific Miracles that deal with:

         1-  Embryology.
         2-  Biology.
         3-  Astronomy.
         4-  Geology.
         5-  Mathematics
         6-  Archeology.
         7-  Prophecies [1].

    For example:

1-  The explosion of the Universe, Galaxies and Stars bring about Smoke.

"When the sky disintegrates, and turns rose colored like paint (
وردة كالدهان)." (The Noble Quran, 55:37) [2] [3]

Also, the Glorious Quran [1] declares that the earth is:

    1- Spherical.
    2- Suspended in Space.
    3- Rotating around itself.
    4- Is traveling in Space.

This is also all demonstrated in good details in the following video file:

    3-  Conclusion:

As we have clearly seen in the Noble Verses above, there is no contradiction in the Glorious Quran.  One only had to look at the Noble Verses that dealt with the topic of pregnancy, gestation, breast feeding and weaning to see that there is clearly no contradiction in the Noble Verses.  The total period varies depending on what the father wants.  Also, "in  في" clearly demonstrated that the period was dynamic, depending on the baby and the parents, and that the 30 months that Allah Almighty mentioned were a picture and close estimate to enable the children to see it and to appreciate more and more their parents, especially their mothers who have gone through a lot of pain to care for them.

And as we've also clearly seen above, the Glorious Quran is filled with Overwhelming Scientific Miracles in It, and also amazing Prophecies.

Indeed, all Praise and Glory are due to Allah Almighty alone for making the Noble Quran be the Perfect and Everlasting Miracle, for us humans, out of all of His Divine Miracles!  And may Allah Almighty send His Peace, Mercy and Blessings upon our Beloved and Blessed Prophet, Teacher and Role Model, Muhammad.  Ameen.

    4-  Rebuttals:

The following is a conversation that is taking place on this website's blog regarding this article:

Thanks for the post brother! As always i have appreciated your work on Quran's interpretation. JazakAllah.
But related to above post, one thing that i get confused in is that as Quran's Allah's word then this ayah must be talking about something precise as Lord could never talk on the basis of estimations and all, He encompasses each and everything. And if its an estimate how could one differentiate between estimates and the precise words on Allah in Quran. And Also my thoughts on this ayah are that Allah Almighty is talking about precise 6 months gestation period and that is based from the time of conception and not from the time of last menstruation cycle of women as is usually is the case because humans cannot exactly estimate the exact day of conception. So based on that it amounts to around 25 and just over half weeks . Based on that it could be deduced that 25 and just over half week is the time period by which a child born is viable and he/she doesnt need any equipement to survive. Usually its after 24 weeks of gestation length that a baby can survive so adding for one or two weeks to convert this since conception, it goes the same length.

Pardon me for any error in the above as these are just thoughts on this.

    As'salamu Alaikum brother Hilariousastal,

The following Noble Verse that is mentioned in the article answers your questions:

[002:233]  The mothers shall give suck to their offspring for two whole years (حولين كاملين), if the father desires to complete the term.

Here are a few points that answer your concerns, which I've already mentioned in the Article:

1-  The two full years may or may not be completed.

2-  Mothers do vary in terms of being wet.  Some mothers go dry much earlier than others.  They all vary, and this had always been a known fact.  This is even mentioned in Noble Verse 2:233 that I just quoted.  Read the part about hiring a foster mother, if needed for those fathers who want to complete the full two years.

3-  Allah Almighty didn't give an estimate number out of confusion.  No.  Instead, Allah Almighty gave us, the children of our parents, a number that is close enough to give the picture of the type of hardship that our parents had to endure when we were babies.  Babies don't just eat any food, nor are they like ordinary children.

4-  It is crystal clear from the Holy Quran that the total number of months for the pregnancy, gestation, nursing and weaning periods varies, and isn't a fixed number.

5-  Now, your thoughts are very interesting, akhi (brother).  But I personally still think that the number is just a picture.  But your point on the 6 months gestation period is also very interesting.  Jazaka Allah Khayr (may Allah Almighty bless you).  Ameen.

    I hope this helps, Insha'Allah.

    Take care,
    Osama Abdallah
