i know this question seems a bit illogical but since the qibla is towards the holy kabaa, doesn't that mean that if i look opposite the qibla i'll still be looking towards the kabaa? since the earth is spherical??
-
or is it the shortest distance from the kabaa that counts as qibal?

This has been dealt with by Arabic websites:

I couldn't find any English website which deals with it though.

lets say you are in front of kaaba (closest distance). You do not let your rear ends to face Kaaba and opt (the farthest distance) to reach the other side of Kaaba despite technically you are still facing Kaaba.
if you are at a point of equal distance, if there is no local mosque for qibla. it should not be any issue to face either way or if at lost to face anywhere.
And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah . Indeed, Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.(2:115)
