Brother, Arbery seems to be the only non-muslim to translate it as 'and we extend it wide'.

The others just translate it as 'we make this ample' ect.

This is also true for Yusuf Ali

why are half the translators mistranslating it? Is it because they can not grasp it?

As'salamu Alaikum dear brother,

I apologize for not being able to interact actively with you.  I've been very busy.  The following points should answer you insha'Allah:

1-  Many of the English translations are basically built on each others.  So, having a quantity of translations saying something that is not accurate doesn't necessarily give them credibility.

2-  The contineous expansion of the Universe theory is something only recently has been discovered, in 1929.

3-  Sheikh Abdullah Yusuf Ali, may Allah Almighty rest his soul, began translating the Glorious Quran in 1934: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdullah_Yusuf_Ali.

4-  Either the theory was not known to him, or he simply decided to not include it.  Besides, brother Egyptian already had shown how the Arabs of old understood the word to mean a continuous expansion, and how the older translations understood it as a continuous expansion.

I hope this helps, insha'Allah.

Take care,
Osama Abdallah

Thank you brother, i understand better now:) And as you say on your blog, real life commitments do come first :)

Thanks once again:)

Salam Alykum.

Also i would like to add some of the various english translations of the Holy Quran that show that the universe is expanding. Some of these are from Quransearch.com.

Tanwīr al-Miqbās min Tafsīr Ibn 'Abbās Attributed variously to: 'Abdullāh Ibn 'Abbās Muḥammad al-Fīrūzabādī TRANSLATED BY Mokrane Guezzou:

[51:47] (We have built) created (the heaven with might, and We it is who make the vast extent (thereof)) as We will; it is also said that this means: we expand the provision thereof.

A Reformist Translation Translated and Annotated by Edip Yuksel Layth Saleh al-Shaiban Martha Schulte-Nafeh:

[51:47] We constructed the universe with might, and We are expanding it.

Dr. Munir Munshey: [051:047]  With Our power and prowess, We brought into being the universe. And indeed, We expand it (steadily)!

Khalifa: [051:047]  We constructed the sky with our hands, and we will continue to expand it

Sahih International: [51:047] And the Heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander

51:47: Al-Muntakhab: "And the heaven with its regions, spheres and realms of space did We skillfully, powerfully and authoritatively construct and We are expanding the universe.

51:47: T. B. Irving: "The sky We have built firmly and We are extending it."

51:47: Tahir al-Qadri: "And We built the heavenly universe with great might. And surely We are expanding (this universe) more and more."

51:47: Muhammad Taqi Usmani: "And the sky was built by Us with might; and indeed We are the expanders."

51:47: Muhammad Mahmoud Ghali: "And the heaven (is also a sign). We have built it with (Our) Hands (i.e., Capability) and surely We are indeed extending (it) wide."

51:47: Bijan Moeinian: "I (God) have created the universe myself and will continue to expand it."

51:47: Ali Unal: "And the heaven, We have constructed it mightily, and it is surely We Who have vast power, and keep expanding it."

51:47: Muhammad Ahmed & Samira: "And the sky/space We built/constructed it with power/support, and We are extending/spreading."

51:47: Progressive Muslims: "And We constructed the universe using matter, and We will expand it.

This is a link of reference about shape of universe from NASA (http://map.gsfc.nasa.gov/universe/uni_shape.html).

Almighty God said He is the One that controls the expansive universe. That's why if we search for facts on the final stage of expansion (or End of Days@Big Crunch). We can't find any possibilities of it to happen. Thus the argument of Universe expanding-forever remains true for human as human will never know when it will end.

But ,  Almighty God said,

"And it is We who have constructed the heaven with might, and verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it."
(The Qur'an, 51:47)

"Verily, the Hour is surely coming. But I will to keep it hidden, that every soul may be rewarded for that which it strives (to achieve)." [The Qur'an 20:15]

Almighty God explanation on end of days about what will happen to our flat universe.

The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records. As We began the first creation, We will repeat it. [That is] a promise binding upon Us. Indeed, We will do it. (The Qur'an, 21:104)

Indeed , this is a great verse from the Divine Creator reminding us to always prepare before the coming of Judgement Day.

Brother Osama please explain the allegation raised by Brother Tanveer. The following is his allegation,

"Apparently some people purposefully twist ayahs to make it look like a miracle when actually its purely figurative. The ayah on mountains being pegs is apparently a supposed miracle but actually meant to be figurative. I dunno, i dont really have that much knowledge on this issue."

Assalamu Alaykum, brothers,

I have an small update. I have collected more correct translations of 51:47 that agree with the Expanding Miracle. Two things you should keep in mind. 1) In the last half of the ayah it is always translated as present continuous..eg 'we ARE makers of....', not 'we WERE makers of...'. 2) We have proven and will still prove musioun means expand, expanding, expander..etc. Here they are:

Amatul Rahman Omar
As for the heaven, We have built it with (Our) Mighty power, and verily We are Makers of the vast extent.

Hamid S. Aziz
And the heaven, We raised it high with power, and it is We that expand the vastness of space (or We are the expanders of it).

Faridul Haque
And We have built the heaven with hands (the Divine Power), and it is We Who give the expanse.

Edward Henry Palmer
And the heaven - we have built it with might, and, verily, we do surely give it ample space!

Arthur John Arberry
And heaven -- We built it with might, and We extend it wide.

Ahmed Raza Khan (Barelvi)
And We have built the heaven with hands (the Divine Power), and it is We Who give the expanse.

Talal A. Itani (new translation)
We constructed the universe with power, and We are expanding it.

Muhammad Asad
AND IT IS We who have built the universe with [Our creative] power; and, verily, it is We who are steadily expanding it.

Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar
And We built the heaven with potency. And, truly, We are ones who extend wide.

Ali Quli Qara'i
We have built the sky with might, and indeed it is We who are its expanders.

Hamid S. Aziz
And the heaven, We raised it high with power, and it is We that expand the vastness of space (or We are the expanders of it).

Shabbir Ahmed
And it is We Who have built the Universe, and behold, We are steadily expanding it.

Dr. Kamal Omar
And the heaven: We constructed it with (Our Own) hands; and surely We are indeed those Who make expansion and create vastness.

Mir Aneesuddin:
And the sky, We constructed it with energy, and We are the Expanders (of it)

The Majestic Quran (Ali Oztek et al.):
We built the heaven with might, and We are able to expand it.

Assalamualaykum

Although it is true that Arabic words have many meanings, they forget about the literary element called context... Therefore their argument falls on top of itself

Also any time they bring up this silly argument go straight to the mathematical miracle of the Qur'an.. These miracles are irrefutable unless they keep claiming they are coincidences after a while that argument will also fall on top of itself because their are simply too many occurrences of mathematical miracles in the Qur'an
Yawn (day) repeated 365 times in the singular
Shahar (month) repeated 12 times
Adam and Jesus repeated 25 times each... Answering Christianity has a nice article on this topic
The miracle of 19
their are many more occurrences of repititions in the Qur'an

Also brother it should be noted that their are some people who are too blind to see the truth and at the end of the day it is only  Allah who grants guidance
Peace!(:
