What is the area of the planet Earth?
« on: December 07, 2012, 11:16:34 AM »
As'salamu Alaikum Everyone,

The formula to measure the surface area of a sphere is:

pi * diameter^2 (or 4 * pi * radius^2)

EDIT: U R 2 oblivious -- Volume is calculated with:

(pi * diameter^3) / 6 (or 4/3 * pi * radius^3)

The earth is not a perfect sphere (bit flattened at the poles) but close enough for this. The radius of the earth is 6.37 x 10^6 meters. If you do the math you get:

1,097,509,500,000,000,000,000 cubic meters (or 1.09 sextillion cubic meters). Quite a lot and the earth is not even all that big for a planet!

The exact answer after fiddling with exact measurements for a not quite spherical earth is 1,083,206,246,123,080,894,852 cubic meters.

Take care,
Osama Abdallah

or 1.09 * 10^21 m^3

wow

You know all this makes me wonder. The Arab Muslims back in Biruni's time figured out the exact radius of the Earth which scientists had calculated using satellites later. Biruni knew trigonometry and the area of a sphere. I'm pretty sure he must've figured out the area of the Earth.

As-Salamu `Alaykum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuh akhi,
The word land in the Glorious Qur'an appears 13 times and the word sea appears 32 times. If you add both they make 45. If you divide the 13/45 you get 28.9% and if you divide the 32/45 you get 71.1% Subhan Allah. I think nowadays it differs slightly because the number of land is decreasing, but I assert this was the exact percentage at the time of Prophet Muhammad (may Almighty Allah bless him and his family and grant them peace).

Just saying, Biruni was a Persian, not an Arab.
