or did the Jews never used to pray 50 is it just an example of how much reward we get?

Wa Alaikum As'salam dear brother,
Quite honestly, this story (the Prophet ascended to Heaven from Jerusalem) isn't supported in the Glorious Quran. Therefore, it could be a made up lie.
Brother Fadi correct me here:

The story of Prophet Muhammad ascending to Heaven IS MENTIONED in the Glorious Quran. May Allah Almighty forgive me for making the error. Ameen. And may Allah Almighty bless brother Fadi for correcting me. Ameen.

....Then I came to Musa and he told me to go back, so I went back and He reduced it by ten. Then it was reduced it by ten. Then it was reduced to five prayers. He (Musa) said: 'Go back to you Lord and ask Him to reduce it, for two prayers were enjoined upon the Children of Israel but they did not establish them.'......

Israelite period were decreed two prayers. If during Abrahamaic period was 48 prayers, that will entotal 50. But from the story narrated, 50 only for nation of final covenant.

As'salamu Alaikum dear brother,
I do believe in the ISRA and MIRA'AJ. The Isra from the Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa in Jerusalem (or al-Quds in Arabic) is mentioned in the following Noble Verse:
[017:001] Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
As to the MIRAAJ (ascension to Heaven), it is also mentioned in another Noble Verse. Please see brother Fadi's correction here:
www.answering-christianity.com/blog/index.php/topic,2421.msg11019.html#msg11019:
"Asèsalamo alaik akhi Osama,
I read your article and was surprised that you deny ascendant of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) into the sky (heaven). According to Quran, it’s crystal clear that he did.
(53:13-15) And he certainly saw him in another descent; Near the Lote-tree beyond which none may pass; Near it is the Paradise of Abode."
