Descendants can be metaphoric here since Prophet Abraham is called our father, and satan's followers are called his seeds:

So Noah is our father.  Tafsir ibn Kathir is wrong, because no flood ever covered the entire earth, and the Glorious Quran does not talk about the doom of all nations via the flood.  It only talked about the doomed people of Noah via the flood, and the livestock that Noah and the few with him were commanded to take with them in his little ship/ark.

It remains in the unseen and unknown as to how many Prophets and Messengers exactly came from the bloodline of Noah, and how many were metaphoric from other nations, peace be upon all of Prophets and Messengers of Allah Almighty.  This nobody knows and is only known to Allah Almighty.  But what is known is that Allah Almighty made Prophet Noah the cornerstone of what Allah Almighty called one of the Glorious Quran's GREATEST Miracles:

Is Noah's flood local or global? I know that you say it is local because why would Allah punish all nations just for one nation? However, the Quran seems to suggest that the flood was global.

If flood was local, the river and sea level had rose beyond the tallest mountain within Noah's (pbuh) nation. That means the other side of planet experienced recede in water level.

If flood was global, then water level around the globe will just rose to the extent where the tallest mountain in Noah's nation submerged. Still other parts of world higher than the said mountain would not be affected at all.

The ship was a small boat that carried Noah and his believers and some livestock.  The flood was local and the hill or small mountain that they landed on was also local.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

How is everyone?

I have not been here for almost half a year but now I am back to ask more questions. So if the flood of Nuh عليه السلام was local can anyone on this forum explain these verses?

[36:41-43]"Another sign for them is that We carried their ancestors ˹with Noah˺ in the fully loaded Ark,
and created for them similar things to ride in.
If We willed, We could drown them: then no one would respond to their cries, nor would they be rescued—"

[17:003]"O descendants of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah. Indeed, he was a grateful servant."

[69:011]"Indeed, when the floodwater had overflowed, We carried you in the floating Ark ˹with Noah˺,"

As for verse 37:77, brother Osama cleared that up for me completely so Jazakallah Khayran for that.

But please tell me why these 3 verses say we are descendants of those in the ship with Noah.

Please address these 3 verses one by one.

جزاكم الله خيرا

wa Alaikum As'salam Wa Rahmatu Allah Wa Barakatuh,

"...We could drown them: then no one would respond to their cries, nor would they be rescued"

The flood was local.  It did not include all nations of the earth.  It was only a punishment to Noah's people similar GOD Almighty's punishment to Lot's people.  Please visit:

Ok one last question. Why does Quran verse 37:77 say that only Noah's descendents were saved from the flood when Noah's followers who were not his family were also in the Ark?

(I now understand that the verse says only his household OUT OF HIS PEOPLE were saved and not out of the whole world but now I am asking why it says only his descendents were saved as he also had unrelated followers?)

Jazakallah Khayran

[037:076]  And We delivered him and his people from the Great Calamity,
[037:077]  And made his progeny to endure (on this earth);
[037:078]  And We left (this blessing) for him among generations to come in later times:
[037:079]  "Peace and salutation to Noah among the nations!"

Prophet Noah, peace be upon him, and his followers (people) were saved.  The believers were not drowned.  Noah's son was among the disbelievers and he perished.

Noah's offspring after the flood were the fathers and bloodline of Prophets.  This I believe is limited to the Middle Eastern Prophets and Messengers.
