Yusuf Ali:

[004:020]  But if ye decide to take one wife in place of another, even if ye had given the latter a whole treasure for dower, Take not the least bit of it back: Would ye take it by slander and manifest wrong?

[004:021]  And how could ye take it when ye have gone in unto each other, and they have Taken from you a solemn covenant?

[004:020]  In case you want to replace a wife with another, do not take back anything you may have given to her in the past, even if it were a very large sum. Would you take back (your gift) by resorting to slander and a flagrant injustice?

[004:021]  How can you take anything back, after you have already consummated the relationship (and enjoyed each other)? She has secured from you a firm commitment!

Transliteration:

[004:020]  Wa-in aradtumu istibdala zawjin makana zawjin waataytum ihdahunna qintaran fala ta/khuthoo minhu shay-an ata/khuthoonahu buhtanan wa-ithman mubeenan

[004:021]  Wakayfa ta/khuthoonahu waqad afda baAAdukum ila baAAdin waakhathna minkum meethaqan ghaleethan

4:20 وان اردتم استبدال زوج مكان زوج واتيتم احداهن قنطارا فلا تاخذوا منه شيئا اتاخذونه بهتانا واثما مبينا

4:21 وكيف تاخذونه وقد افضى بعضكم الى بعض واخذن منكم ميثاقا غليظا

Sher Ali:

[004:020]  And if you desire to take one wife in place of another and you have given one of them a treasure, take not aught therefrom. Will you take it by false accusations and manifest sinfulness ?

[004:021]  And how can you take it when one of you may have consorted with the other, and they (the women) have taken from you a strong covenant ?

Shakir:

[004:020]  And if you wish to have (one) wife in place of another and you have given one of them a heap of gold, then take not from it anything; would you take it by slandering (her) and (doing her) manifest wrong?

[004:021]  And how can you take it when one of you has already gone in to the other and they have made with you a firm covenant?

Pickthall:

[004:020]  And if ye wish to exchange one wife for another and ye have given unto one of them a sum of money (however great), take nothing from it. Would ye take it by the way of calumny and open wrong ?

[004:021]  How can ye take it (back) after one of you hath gone in unto the other, and they have taken a strong pledge from you ?

Sale:

[004:020]  If ye be desirous to exchange a wife for another wife, and ye have already given one of them a talent; take not away any thing therefrom; Will ye take it by slandering her, and doing her manifest unjustice?

[004:021]  And how can ye take it, since the one of you hath gone in unto the other, and they have received from you a firm covenant?

Muhammad Al-Hilali & Muhsin Khan:

[004:020]  But if you intend to replace a wife by another and you have given one of them a Cantar (of gold i.e. a great amount) as Mahr, take not the least bit of it back; would you take it wrongfully without a right and (with) a manifest sin?

[004:021]  And how could you take it (back) while you have gone in unto each other, and they have taken from you a firm and strong covenant?

Palmer:

[004:020]  But if ye wish to exchange one wife for another, and have given one of them a talent, then take not from it anything. What! would you take it for a calumny and a manifest crime?

[004:021]  How care ye take it when one of you has gone in unto the other, and they have taken from you a rigid compact?

Arberry:

[004:020]  And if you desire to exchange a wife in place of another, and you have given to one a hundredweight, take of it nothing. What, will you take it by way of calumny and manifest sin?

[004:021]  How shall you take it, when each of you has been privily with the other, and they have taken from you a solemn compact?

Khalifa: (why is he here?)

[004:020]  If you wish to marry another wife, in place of your present wife, and you had given any of them a great deal, you shall not take back anything you had given her. Would you take it fraudulently, maliciously, and sinfully?

[004:021]  How could you take it back, after you have been intimate with each other, and they had taken from you a solemn pledge?

Rodwell:

[004:020]  And if ye be desirous to exchange one wife for another, and have given one of them a talent, make no deduction from it. Would ye take it by slandering her, and with manifest wrong?

[004:021]  How, moreover, could ye take it, when one of you hath gone in unto the other, and they have received from you a strict bond of union?

[033:007]  And remember We took from the prophets their covenant: As (We did) from thee: from Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus the son of Mary: We took from them a solemn covenant:

[033:007]  (Remember)! We have secured covenants from all messengers, including you, Nooh, Ibraheem, Musa and Jesus, the son of Mary. We have obtained from them a solid and solemn pact.

[033:007]  And call to mind when WE took from the Prophets their covenant, and from thee, and from Noah and Abraham, and Moses and Jesus, son of Mary, and WE indeed, took from them a solemn covenant;

Shakir:

[033:007]  And when We made a covenant with the prophets and with you, and with Nuh and Ibrahim and Musa and Isa, son of Marium, and We made with them a strong covenant

Pickthall:

[033:007]  And when We exacted a covenant from the prophets, and from thee (O Muhammad) and from Noah and Abraham and Moses and Jesus son of Mary. We took from them a solemn covenant;

Sale:

[033:007]  Remember when we accepted their covenant from the prophets, and from thee, O Mohammed, and from Noah, and Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus the son of Mary, and received from them a firm covenant;

Muhammad Al-Hilali & Muhsin Khan:

[033:007]  And (remember) when We took from the Prophets their covenant, and from you (O Muhammad SAW), and from Nooh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Moosa (Moses), and Iesa (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). We took from them a strong covenant.

[033:007]  And when we took of the prophets their compact, from thee and from Noah, and Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus the son of Mary, and took of them a rigid compact,

[033:007]  And when We took compact from the Prophets, and from thee, and from Noah, and Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, Mary's son; We took from them a solemn compact,

[033:007]  Recall that we took from the prophets their covenant, including you (O Muhammad), Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus the son of Mary. We took from them a solemn pledge.

[033:007]  And remember that we have entered into covenant with the Prophets, and with thee, and with Noah, and Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus, Son of Mary: and we formed with them a strict covenant,
