Rebuttal to Sam Shamoun on "Women in the Bible - Part II"

Some Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") point to Leviticus 15:19-30 so as to show that Gods true Word claims that women are physically defiling when they have their menses since anything they touch becomes unclean.
What many Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") who cite this text conveniently do is to ignore the entire context so as to make it seem that the Bible specifically looks down upon women for having menses. They normally do not quote what immediately precedes this specific section since if they do a totally different picture emerges:
"IF ANY MAN has a bodily discharge, the discharge is unclean. Whether it continues flowing from his body or is blocked, it will make him unclean. This is how his discharge will bring about uncleanness: Any bed the man with a discharge lies on will be unclean, and anything he sits on will be unclean. Anyone who touches his bed must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Whoever sits on anything that the man with a discharge sat on must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Whoever touches the man who has a discharge must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. If the man with the discharge spits on someone who is clean, that person must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Everything the man sits on when riding will be unclean, and whoever touches any of the things that were under him will be unclean till evening; whoever picks up those things must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Anyone the man with a discharge touches without rinsing his hands with water must wash his clothes and bathe with water, and he will be unclean till evening. A clay pot that the man touches must be broken, and any wooden article is to be rinsed with water. When a man is cleansed from his discharge, he is to count off SEVEN DAYS for his ceremonial cleansing; he must wash his clothes and bathe himself with fresh water, and he will be clean. On the EIGHTH DAY he must take TWO DOVES OR TWO YOUNG PIGEONS and come before the LORD to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and give them to the priest. The priest is to sacrifice them, the one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. In this way he WILL MAKE ATONEMENT before the LORD for the man because of his discharge. When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body with water, and he will be unclean till evening. Any clothing or leather that has semen on it must be washed with water, and it will be unclean till evening. When a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen, BOTH must bathe with water, and THEY will be unclean till evening."" Leviticus 15:1-9
The entire chapter is addressing ritual impurity, not moral impurity or gender equality or lack thereof. It is quite clear that women are not being degraded here; otherwise we would have to conclude that men are also being degraded. A further indication that the passage is not degrading women can again be seen from the fact that the offering for atonement is exactly the same for both.
The Bible teaches that women who touch other persons during the impurity become unclean. Yet the Gospels record that Jesus was touched by an unclean woman, who fell at his feet:
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed." Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" (Mark 5:25-32)
Should we call Jesus defiled because he was touched by an unclean woman? We are forced to accept this conclusion because Jesus was fully human; therefore he was defiled (according to the Bible). The conclusion is based on the Christian viewpoint, as Christians argue Jesus was fully human and fully God at the same time, his fleshy side was spiritually defiled by the woman, but his divine side was unaffected by the womans touch. Apparently, Jesus did not know whether he was touched by a man or woman, he never made eye-contact with the unclean woman. This means Jesus had no idea that he became unclean (on his fleshy part); even his divine nature did not know who touched him.

The Gospels imply that Jesus was a repentant sinner, he was baptized by John as a remission of sins (Mark 1:4), so if Jesus was a repentant sinner, should we then conclude that he became unclean after the woman touched him?
Jesus uttered the following words:
Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the stomach and is expelled? 1But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone." (Matthew 15:17-20)
Jesus rejected adultery, sexual immorality, theft, and false witness, but according to the New Testament, Jesus endorsed the killing of enemies (Luke 19:27) and committed murder (Revelations 2:22), he also used offensive language to slander other people (Matt. 15:7, 22:18, 23:17, Lk. 11:40), clearly denying his own teaching. The Bible portrays Jesus as defiled, because he is forced to contradict his own teachings, deny his own methods, and misquote the Old Testament. We have exposed the Biblical distortions of Jesus character, the Islamic scriptures do not record any negative facts about Jesus, and only the New Testament disowns him.
A man who touches the womans blood (during her monthly flow) will be unclean for seven days!
" 'If a man lies with her and her monthly flow touches him, he will be unclean for seven days; any bed he lies on will be unclean. (Leviticus 15:24)
Apart from the ritual aspect, another possible reason why these laws were given was to protect others within the camp of Israel from contracting any possible disease or illness from the flow of blood or bodily discharges. After all, God did make the following promise to Israel:
"He said, If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you." Exodus 15:26
"The LORD will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible diseases you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all who hate you." Deuteronomy 7:15
Thus, Gods laws may have had the purpose of preventing others from contracting diseases which could be passed on by such blood flow and bodily fluids.
God actually supports diseases HIV/AIDS according to the Bible. Here are the passages where God promotes sexually-transmitted diseases:
Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall inherit them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. (Jeremiah 8:10)
Now then, hear the word of the LORD. You say, " 'Do not prophesy against Israel, and stop preaching against the house of Isaac.' "Therefore this is what the LORD says: " 'Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your sons and daughters will fall by the sword. (Amos 7:16-18)
The LORD said to me, "Go, show your love to your wife again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress. Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other gods and love the sacred raisin cakes." (Hosea 3:1)
Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: Therefore the LORD will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts. (Isaiah 3:16-17)
God promotes sexual lust:
This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you," declares the LORD, "because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods. I will pull up your skirts over your face that your shame may be seen. (Jeremiah 13:25-26)
God defends children of incest.
So both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father. The older daughter had a son, and she named him Moab; he is the father of the Moabites of today. The younger daughter also had a son, and she named him Ben-Ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites of today. (Genesis 19:36-38)
Then the LORD said to me, "Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any part of their land. I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as a possession." (Deuteronomy 2:9)
When you come to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them to war, for I will not give you possession of any land belonging to the Ammonites. I have given it as a possession to the descendants of Lot." (Deuteronomy 2:19)
The Ammonites and Moabites descended from Lot, who had sex with his two daughters:
"They ask you concerning menstruation. Say: that is an Adha (a harmful thing for a husband to have sexual intercourse with his wife while she is having her menses), therefore keep away from women during menses and go not unto them till they have purified (from menses and have taken a bath). And when they have purified themselves, then go in unto them as All‚h has ordained for you (go in unto them in any manner as long as it is in their vagina). Truly, All‚h loves those who turn unto Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves (by taking a bath and cleaning and washing thoroughly their private parts, bodies, for their prayers, etc.)." S. 2:222 Hilali-Khan

According to one source, the word Adha,
" signifies a slight evil or anything causing a slight harm" (Abdul Mannan Omar, ed., Dictionary of the Holy Qur'an [Noor Foundation, 2003], p. 19)
First of all when the Quran says that we should keep away from the women during their menses it only means for sexual intercourse.
Ibn Kathir says in his commentary...
Allah's Messenger said:
(`Do everything you wish, except having sexual intercourse.)
When the Jews were told about the Prophet's statement, they said, "What is the matter with this man He would not hear of any of our practices, but would defy it.'' Then, Usayd bin Hudayr and `Abbad bin Bishr came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! The Jews said this and that, should we have sex with our women (meaning, during the menstruation period)'' The face of Allah's Messenger changed color, until the Companions thought that he was angry with them. They left. Soon after, some milk was brought to Allah's Messenger as a gift, and he sent some of it for them to drink. They knew then that Allah's Messenger was not angry with them. Muslim also reported this Hadith. Allah said:
(therefore, keep away from women during menses.) meaning, avoid the sexual organ.
The Prophet said:
Do anything you wish except having sexual intercourse.
This is why most of the scholars said that it is allowed to fondle the wife, except for having sexual intercourse (when she is having her menses). Abu Dawud reported that `Ikrimah related to one of the Prophet's wives that she said that whenever the Prophet wanted to fondle (one of his wives) during her menses, he would cover her sexual organ with something. This is because it is harmful to have sex with women when they have their menses.
Some studies suggest that having sex during your period may increase your chances of developing PID. This is believed to be because the cervix is open during menstruation and the presence of blood may help some bacteria to multiply.
Unlike the Bible, which says that the man should not even touch the woman and everything the woman touches is defiled. It goes on further to even say...
" 'If a man lies with a woman during her monthly period and has sexual relations with her, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them must be cut off from their people. (Leviticus 20:18)
There is even a hadith which may explain why menses are so offensive to Allah:
Narrated Grandfather of Adi ibn Thabit
Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Sneezing, drowsing, yawning in prayer, also menstruation, vomiting and nose-bleeding are from (the acts of) Satan. Transmitted by Tirmidhi. (Tirmidhi Hadith, Number 315; ALIM CD-ROM Version)
This narration erroneously attributes menses to Satan! Is it therefore any wonder why Allah is so displeased by them?
First, the Hadith is poetic and figurative. From an earthly medical point of view, the act of yawning is probably healthy, but from a spiritual perspective, yawning is inspired from by Satan to distract the Believers attention/ focus. It is collectively true that (When) yawning occurs during prayer, Satan is trying to (lead the Believer astray) divert/distract the Believers (by sleepiness) heart astray. The explanation of the hadith is that because yawning is a result from people who either eating too much or are lazy, Satan uses this in order to preoccupy the persons mind from obeying Allah. (Source)
You even have another hadith that states this...
Narrated Abu Qatada:
The Prophet said, "A true good dream is from Allah, and a bad dream is from Satan." (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 87, Number 113)
However, that does not mean that every nightmare you have is from Satan. It could mean:
Ibn Hajar said: the fact that bad dreams are mentioned in conjunction with the Shaytaan means that they share his characteristics of lying and exaggeration, etc., unlike true dreams which are mentioned in conjunction with the name of Allaah by way of honour, even though all of them are created and decreed by Allaah.Fath al-Baari, 12/393.
So when the Prophet says that menstruation is from Satan. It could mean that since menstruation is a negative thing (in the sense that it causes a woman pain and is not purified enough to pray to Allah) then the devil shares in these features. Because the devil is negative and does not worship God.
Another meaning is that the devil is a synonym, which refers to things that nullify prayer.
This is only a method of speaking and in no way is degrading the woman. The Prophet even said that yawning and nightmares are from Satan. Men also have nightmares and sneeze, so does that mean that the Prophet is degrading men as well? No!
The medieval philosopher Pierre Abelard gives
an advise to people like Sam Shamoun, he said:
If you cannot understand figurative language, avoid intellectual pursuits.
The example below may convey the meaning or use of this figure of speech even more clearly:
Matthew 16:23 "But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men."
In this verse, the figure of speech is "get thee behind me, Satan". Jesus addressing Peter was highlighted to show whom he was addressing; denoting the figure Apodioxis. (http://www.mdvaden.com/figures.shtml)
Muhammad also believed that women were deficient in religion because of their menses:
Narrated Abu Said:
The Prophet said, "Isnt it true that a woman does not pray and does not fast on menstruating? And that is the defect (a loss) in her religion." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 3, Book 31, Number 172)
Muhammad not only insults women by attacking their religious piety due to something that is beyond their control, but also adds insult to injury by attacking their intelligence.
In light of the foregoing, we therefore have good grounds to say that it is the Quran, not the Holy Bible, which views womens menses as an illness, a hurt, and an evil that impacts religious piety. Obviously, the Quran is clearly wrong here since we know from medical science that menses are actually very good and healthy for women, and that menses do not originate from Satan.
The Prophet permitted Believers (men and woman) to make up for prayers which have been missed lost/forgotten. The Prophet allowed making up for the fasts that were missed during Ramadan due to illness, or any other reason. Sickness is the will of Allah, its beyond our control, yet we are blessed with the chance to make up for it.
Islam acknowledges that menstruation is beyond the control of women...
'A'isha reported: "The Messenger of Allah (may
peace be upon him) said to me: Get me the mat from the mosque. I said: I am
menstruating. Upon this he remarked: Your menstruation is not in your
hand. (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Menstruation (Kitab Al-Haid),
Book 003, Number 0587)"
Abu Huraira reported: "While the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) was in the mosque, he said: O 'A'isha, get me that garment. She said: I am menstruating. Upon this he remarked: Your menstruation is not in your hand, and she, therefore, got him that. (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Menstruation (Kitab Al-Haid), Book 003, Number 0589)"
Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") mockingly cite Numbers 5:11-31 regarding Gods adultery test which was prescribed for an accused woman. This passage tells a suspicious husband who believes that his wife is guilty of unfaithfulness to go before the priest in order to see if whether his suspicions are valid or not. The priest will then give the woman a drinking jar consisting of a mixture of water and dust from the tabernacle floor. According to this text, if the woman were guilty the mixture would cause her thigh to waste away and her abdomen to swell.
The Bible allows fathers to stick their fingers into their daughters' vaginas before marriage:
If a man takes a wife and, after lying with her, dislikes her and slanders her and gives her a bad name, saying, "I married this woman, but when I approached her, I did not find proof of her virginity," then the girl's father and mother shall bring proof that she was a virgin to the town elders at the gate. The girl's father will say to the elders, "I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he dislikes her. Now he has slandered her and said, 'I did not find your daughter to be a virgin.' But here is the proof of my daughter's virginity." Then her parents shall display the cloth before the elders of the town, and the elders shall take the man and punish him. (Deuteronomy 22:13-18)

We really do not see the so-called problem behind this command since the reference presupposes a miraculous act of God in either vindicating or condemning the accused woman. What objections could a Muslim possibly have with this passage seeing that they take for granted that miracles do occur?
Furthermore, as the NIV Study Bible indicates this test was actually an act of mercy from God:
5:15-28 The actions presented here seem severe and harsh. But the consequences would have been worse for a woman charged with adultery by an angry husband if there was no provision for her guilt or innocence to be demonstrated. That she was taken to the priest (v. 15) is finally an act of mercy. The gravity of the ritual for a suspected unfaithful wife shows that the law regards marital infidelity most seriously. This was not just a concern of a jealous husband. The entire community was affected by this breach of faith; hence, the judgment was in the context of the community.
5:18 brings a curse. Or "curse-bringing water of bitterness." It is not just that the water was bitter tasting but that the water had the potential of bringing with it a bitter curse. The Lord's role in the proceedings (vv. 16,21,25) is emphasized repeatedly to show that this potion was neither simply a tool of magic nor merely a psychological device to determine stress. The verdict with respect to the woman was precipitated by her physiological and psychological responses to the bitter water, BUT THE JUDGMENT WAS FROM THE LORD.
5:21 your thigh to waste away and your abdomen to swell. See NIV text note. The figurative language here (and in vv. 22,27) speaks of the loss of the capacity for childbearing (and, if pregnant, the miscarriage of the child). This is demonstrated by the determination of the fate of the woman wrongly charged (v. 28). For a woman in the ancient Near East to be denied the ability to bear children was a personal loss of inestimable proportions. Since it was in the bearing of children that a woman's worth was realized in the ancient world, this was a grievous punishment. (bold emphasis ours)
Thus, we see that this test was meant to prevent a woman from being falsely accused so as to maintain both her integrity and her right in bearing children. If anything, this shows that the man could not simply accuse his wife and expect that his testimony was good enough to get her condemned to death.
Compare this with the Qur'an where the husband has the right to beat his wife upon his mere suspicion of disloyalty (S. 4:34) even in minor issues. In the Torah, the husband who has the suspicion of infidelity of his wife cannot take matters in his own hand, cannot punish his wife. He has to wait on Gods judgment. This is true protection against injustice inflicted by fallible human beings so often guided by false suspicions. The Quran commands that adulterers are to be lashed with a hundred lashes (S. 24:2) upon conviction by fallible human judges, despite some precautions against misjudgment in the Quran, the judgment is made by fallible human beings (and 100 lashes are not only extremely cruel and painful, but often are a deadly measure, and the Qur'an even emphasizes, "let not compassion move you " [S. 24:2]). In the Torah, only the Lord God who alone knows the truth of the charge against the woman can make the harmless mixture of water and dust from the floor poisonous if the woman is indeed guilty. Otherwise she is free and unharmed.
Moreover, in Islam a womans witness is suspect from the start since her testimony is valued as half that of a mans:
you who believe! when you deal with each other in contracting a debt for a fixed time, then write it down; and let a scribe write it down between you with fairness; and the scribe should not refuse to write as Allah has taught him, so he should write; and let him who owes the debt dictate, and he should be careful of (his duty to) Allah, his Lord, and not diminish anything from it; but if he who owes the debt is unsound in understanding, or weak, or (if) he is not able to dictate himself, let his guardian dictate with fairness; and call in to witness from among your men two witnesses; but if there are not two men, then one man AND TWO WOMEN from among those whom you choose to be witnesses, so that if one of the two errs, the second of the two may remind the other; and the witnesses should not refuse when they are summoned; and be not averse to writing it (whether it is) small or large, with the time of its falling due; this is more equitable in the sight of Allah and assures greater accuracy in testimony, and the nearest (way) that you may not entertain doubts (afterwards), except when it is ready merchandise which you give and take among yourselves from hand to hand, then there is no blame on you in not writing it down; and have witnesses when you barter with one another, and let no harm be done to the scribe or to the witness; and if you do (it) then surely it will be a transgression in you, and be careful of (your duty) to Allah, Allah teaches you, and Allah knows all things. S. 2:282 Shakir
Muhammad is reported to have said:
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
Once Allahs Apostle went out to the Musalla (to offer the prayer) on Id-al-Adha or Al-Fitr prayer. Then he passed by the women and said, "O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women)." They asked, "Why is it so, O Allah's Apostle?" He replied, "You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you." The women asked, "O Allah's Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?" He said, "Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?" They replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn't it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?" The women replied in the affirmative. He said, "This is the deficiency in her religion." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 6, Number 301)
This means that a woman accused of adultery really has no chance against her husband since her testimony is half of his, requiring another woman to testify with her so as to even have a chance against the witness proffered against her by a male!
The Islamic Social System contains a superior law that demands at least four witnesses against the accused adulterer.
Also, the Islamic Law does not punish a man/woman who is tempted to steal. The deliberate act of stealing based on intention (malice) can be punishable, but if a man leaves the door of his house wide open for a thief to commit robbery, the thief is not stoned to death because he was tempted. The Islamic Shariah is merciful.
The Bible does not contain any law for witnesses; the adulterer and adulteress are stoned to death instantly:
And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. (Leviticus 20:10)
The Bible also says that adulterers cannot enter heaven:
"Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9)
This law is cruel and wicked; adulterers will not enter Gods Kingdom! The point we are making is that Islam does not have any laws similar to this one. God Almighty is passionate enough to forgive the sin, hence we dont need blood sacrifices to wipe away sin (Deu. 24:16, Ez. 18:20-22)
We thank Shamoun for quoting Al-Quran 24:4 because in contrast, the Bible contains a harsher law in the case of adultery, stoning to death.
Shamoun will probably argue that Jesus abolished the Law of stoning to death (adulterers) by forgiving the woman caught in adultery (John 7:53-8:11)
But this passage is a forgery:
This was an interpolation by people later on to try to show Jesus abolished the Old Testament laws, while he did not (Matt. 5:17-20).
The testimony of two women equals that of one man is during financial situations only...
Ibn Kathir says:
And if there are not two men (available), then a man and two women) this requirement is only for contracts that directly or indirectly involve money. (http://www.tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=2&tid=7432)
Secondly, if the husband accuses his wife of adultery, she could testify back and cancel out his testimony. Here is the proof:
And for those who launch a charge against their spouses, and have (in support) no evidence but their own, - their solitary evidence (can be received) if they bear witness four times (with an oath) by God that they are solemnly telling the truth; And the fifth (oath) (should be) that they solemnly invoke the curse of God on themselves if they tell a lie. But it would avert the punishment from the wife, if she bears witness four times (with an oath) By God, that (her husband) is telling a lie; And the fifth (oath) should be that she solemnly invokes the wrath of God on herself if (her accuser) is telling the truth. (Surah 24:6-9)
So Shamoun's argument that a woman's testimony is only half when the husband accuses her of adultery is obliterated (and false, cremated).

Besides, despite the quranic demand on witnesses, in practice, as we all know, thousands of women die in honor killings all around the Islamic world. Their families kill them just because of some suspicion that they might have had indecent contact to a man. No witnesses, no proper court trial. The girls are just murdered and the Islamic authorities hardly ever prosecute or punish the murderers.
So what? Honor killings are not taught in Islam. If it is happening in Muslim countries then that does not mean that Islam teaches it. Homosexuality, rape, murder happen in Christian countries, so does Christianity teach it? What logic are you using?
The rape stories of the Bible have influenced the minds of Christians. Here is an example of how Christianity has given birth to the social corruptions today:
A Zion Christian Church leader has been charged with rape for apparently taking a 12-year-old church member as his second wife when he could no longer have sex with his pregnant wife.
How come this guy wasnt punished in accordance with biblical Law? The Bible says:
"And the man that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death." (Leviticus 20:10)
