A Concise Rebuttal to James Arlandson's Article "Apocryphal gospels in the Quran"
James Arlandson's article can be located at http://www..org/Authors/Arlandson/apocryphal.htm
James tends to discredit the authenticity of the Quran by trying to prove that some verses of the Quran contain verses from the apocryphal books. James is arguing that the Quran is copied from books that are "a work of fiction and imagination". However, just because the Quran contains verses from apocryphal books that does not disprove that it is from God.
Christians that use this argument are committing a logical fallacy known as genetic reasoning.
Taken from http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/genetic-fallacy.html
A Genetic Fallacy is a line of "reasoning" in which a perceived defect in the origin of a claim or thing is taken to be evidence that discredits the claim or thing itself. It is also a line of reasoning in which the origin of a claim or thing is taken to be evidence for the claim or thing.
"The current Chancellor of Germany was in the Hitler Youth at age 3. With that sort of background, his so called 'reform' plan must be a facist program."
So basically just because information is found from a source that seems to be bad that does not disprove its credibility.
Secondly, Christians are shooting themselves in the foot when they even apply this criteria to their own Bible. According to Christians themselves some parts of the Bible are found in the apocryphal books! I will even quote from the Answering Islam website
Taken from http://..uk/Responses/Saifullah/bravo_app.htm
For instance, the apostle Paul in several places quotes pagan poets and writers such as Epimenides, Aratus and Menander:
"for In him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your own poets have said, For we are indeed his offspring." Acts 17:28
"Do not be deceived: Bad company ruins good morals." 1 Corinthians 15:33
"One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons." Titus 1:12
Jude cites books from the Pseudepigrapha, namely the Assumption of Moses and 1 Enoch 1:9:
"But when the archangel Michael, contending with the devil, was disputing about the body of Moses, he did not presume to pronounce a blasphemous judgment, but said, The Lord rebuke you." Jude 1:9
The Old Testament is replete with references to non-canonical books, i.e. the book of Jashar, the book of the wars of Yahweh etc.
The bold emphasis is from me. As we can see the book of Jude cites from Enoch, which is an apocryphal book. (read http://reluctant-messenger.com/enoch.htm)
Christians by their own admission believe that some parts of the apocrypha are true.
Taken from http://www.gotquestions.org/book-of-Enoch.html
Some of what the Apocrypha says is true and correct, but at the same time, much of it is false and historically inaccurate.
So isn't it possible that the parts of the Quran that are found in the apocrypha could be the true parts of the apocrypha?
James Arlandson has proved nothing, instead he goes as far as attacking his own scripture. Christians should either stop using these arguments against the Quran or they could just end up shooting themselves in the foot and can't take the bullet out.
