Question on thieves
« on: September 12, 2017, 10:54:17 AM »
Assalamu alaikum.

We know islam says that thiefs should have their hands cut off. Isnt this a little bit aggressive and hardh. For one sin or mistake his whole hand is chopped for the rest of his life? Also is there a price range for the amount stolen also if he does it the first time does it get cut off instantly or multiple times etc. Any good articles on it?

Walaikumsalam bro,

There are conditions that have to be met inorder to proceed with that type of judgment according to IslamQA....

https://islamqa.info/en/9935

seems there is a price range too....

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The hand should be cut off for (the theft of) a quarter of a dinar or more.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, al-Hudood, 6291)

Condition number 2 says...

2-                 The value of the stolen property should be above a certain limit, which is three Islamic dirhams or a quarter of an Islamic dinar, or their equivalent in other currencies.

It's human nature to find it harsh by the way....the law of God has always been very strict even before the coming Islam, take the old testament for example...but God knows what is best for us right bro? Let's assume that a thief should be given an easy punishment instead of a strict one, it would ultimate encourage more people to commit thefts
as they wouldn't even care about the law...my country is a perfect example, infact it's kinda like a safe haven for thieves, if you steal something and get caught, then you don't have to worry about anything, the worst that can happen is that you'll get locked for many years in a 5 star prison.I've known people in my country who commit crimes again and again as soon as their sentence is over because they find life in prison a lot better compared to the outside world.Crimes are skyrocketing everywhere where I live.People aren't even afraid of killing or raping someone and this is what happens when laws aren't strict enough....

As'salamu Alaikum dear brothers,

Islam's harsh punishments on theft and fornication/adultery  cleans the society.  It makes the entire society a safe one.  The plague of children born out of wedlock (marriage), and the high crimes that the USA and the West are suffering from is really based on these two crimes.

I hope this helps, insha'Allah.

Take care,
Osama Abdallah

it is harsh if one sees life on earth as only once (no awakening after death) and hence all desires need to be fulfilled before death.
