AsalamuAlaikum,,

Lol Brother this doesnt surprise me at all. I volunteer at a weekly dawah stall in my town centre and you get some crazy stuff man,

Someone was trying to explain reincarnation to me by saying if you put a hydrocarbon in a class of water. You can either get H2O or Carbon. Therefore reincarnation. Or some rubbish like that.

I was like ok I just told you the Quran mentions the expansion of the Universe 1400 years ago and your talking about this? HUH

People come out with all sorts of rubbish when they throw logic and rational aside.

AsalamuAlaikum,

Im spending any free time i have producing a list of claimed scientific errors in the Qur'an. Answering Christianity has pretty much answered them all but my plan is to have this post here for anyone who feels they may have found a scientific error in the Quran. or a historical error or contradiction here.

So we can investigate and quickly answer it. Because insha'allah i wanna build my own personal database with an answer to every claim out there.

WalakumAsalam.

Asalamualaikum,

Ive spent the night reading through this website and im shocked at the utter rubbish it just sprawls all over the page.

"To rape a child prisoner/slave/victim is grotesquely selfish, immoral, inhuman and grotesquely shameful - - - but Allah has commanded that it is ok if the child is mot pregnant...."

What is this rambling garbage. Rape is forbidden.

"To rape any woman prisoner/slave/victim – a fellow human being – is nearly as selfish and shameful and bad as raping a child. But in the Quran it is “good and lawful”..."

Again rambling rubbish. This is listed under "Mistakes in the Quran – 400+ different mistaken facts arranged by themes. (also excellent for printing). (nb: read this!)"

I was expecting like some scientific errors or contradictions not this rubbish. Whats even funnier this website is sat trying to defend the Bible where the prophets in the bible rape and pillage and kill people on mass scale.

"007 2/119: “- - - glad tidings - - -“. This expression is repeated many places in the Quran, but the Quran only is glad tidings if it is not a made up book, and then only to Muslims, and then again only to some of the Muslims: The ones that likes to go to war to steal from others and become rich, the ones that wants to suppress others to become powerful, and the minority that needs a religion to lean to (there is such a minority in all cultures, and they lean as happily to any religion they happen to believe in). But it is a glad tiding in rhe religious meaning even to those only if it is proved a true religion - - - and so much indicate that the Quran is made up, that Islam will have to prove, not only claim, to be believed. Contradiction in the meaning it is bad tidings for the majority, not to mention for the victims (but Muhammad ans Islam seemed - and at least partly seems - to be on a cultural level where one was/is unable to feel empaty and unable to understand what a catastropy Islam's aggressions and wars meant to other human beings."

Paragraphs of utter rubbish.

I was gonna spend sometime on this website but its actually just utter rambles.

If anyone reads this website and has a question or finds something that troubles them please post it here and insha'Allah we can answer it because the majority of the websites points dont provide any evidence and just are man going on and on about nothing.

Assalamualykum.

Does anyone have idea about this topic? Please help me. :-[ :-[ :'(

Walakumasalam,

To my knowledge the Quran is silent on White Dwarf stars.

But why should it mention them? Its a book of guidance not a university astronomy book.

261
AsalamuAlaikum,

Hey Brother Muzi. What exactly is your question again?

Is it that other cultures speak of man being made from clay?

Simple Answers Allah sent messengers to all of mankind with the same message and with a revelation. High chance Allah mentioned Humans made from an extract of clay then it has reached us today but in a warped way.

Or is it people say Science in the Quran was already known at the time? For that i say bring the proof that it was known.

262
AsalamuAlaikum,

Had a quick look throught the website seems to be the general same "Scientific errors" and "Contradictions".

But most of it just seems to be the ramplings of an angry man who doesnt like Islam trying to find 1000 errors.

263
AsalamuAlaikum,

"Now excuse me for saying this, but this is what I really believe, my question is am I wrong? Can you give me Quranic or authentic hadith verses that say we are commanded to do exactly as Muhammad does? Was I missing something.

I know a sunnah is just something we do to respect Muhammad (pbuh) , but is it really required? I don't eat dates, nor have a beard nor marry young..."

Praise be to Allaah.

The first question may appear strange and somewhat surprising to committed, practising Muslims. How can something which is so obviously one of the bases of Islaam become a matter for discussion and debate? But since the question has been asked, we will present, with the help of Allaah, the principles and bases of the importance of the Sunnah, the obligation to follow it and the ruling concerning those who reject it. By so doing, we will also refute the doubters and the misguided group who call themselves “Qur’aaniyyeen” (the Qur’aan has nothing to do with them!) In sha Allaah this discussion will be of benefit to everyone who wants to understand the truth of the matter.

Proof of the importance of the Sunnah

(1) The Qur’aan speaks of the importance of the Sunnah, for example:

(a) Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “He who obeys the Messenger has indeed obeyed Allaah . . .” [al-Nisaa’ 4:80] Allaah described obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him) as being a part of obedience to Him. Then He made a connection between obedience to Him and obedience to the Prophet (peace be upon him): “O you who believe! Obey Allaah and obey the Messenger . . .” [al-Nisaa’ 4:59]

(b) Allaah warns us not to go against the Prophet (peace be upon him), and states that whoever disobeys him will be doomed to eternal Hell. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “. . . And let those who oppose the Messenger’s commandment beware, lest some fitnah (trial, affliction, etc.) befall them or a painful torment be inflicted on them.” [al-Nur 24:63]

(c) Allaah has made obedience to His Prophet a religious duty; resisting or opposing it is a sign of hypocrisy: “”But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you [Muhammad] judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.” [al-Nisaa’ 4:65]

(d) Allaah commands His slaves to respond to Him and His Messenger: “O you who believe! Answer Allaah (by obeying Him) and (His) Messenger when he calls you to that which will give you life . . .” [al-Anfaal 8:24]

(e) Allaah also commands His slaves to refer all disputes to him: “. . . (And) if you differ in anything amongst yourselves, refer it to Allaah and His Messenger . . .” [al-Nisaa’ 4:59]

(2) The Sunnah itself indicates the importance of the Sunnah. For example:

(a) Al-Tirmidhi reported from Abu Raafi’ and others that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I do not want to see any one of you reclining on his couch and, when he hears of my instructions or prohibitions, saying ‘I don’t accept it; we didn’t find any such thing in the Book of Allaah.’” Abu ‘Eesaa said: This is a saheeh hasan hadeeth. (See Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Shaakir edition, no. 2663).

Al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah, may Allaah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Would any of you think, reclining on his couch, that Allaah would only describe what is forbidden in the Qur’aan? I tell you, by Allaah, that I have warned and commanded and prohibited things that are as important as what is in the Qur’aan, if not more so.” (Reported by Abu Dawud, Kitaab al-Khiraj wa’l-imaarah wa’l-fay’).

(b) Abu Dawud also reported from al-’Irbaad ibn Saariyah, may Allaah be pleased with him, that “the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) led us in prayer one day, then he turned to us and exhorted us strongly . . . (he said), ‘Pay attention to my sunnah (way) and the way of the Rightly-guided Khaleefahs after me, adhere to it and hold fast to it.’” (Saheeh Abi Dawud, Kitaab al-Sunnah).

(3) The scholars’ consensus (ijmaa’) affirming the importance of the Sunnah.

Al-Shaafi’i, may Allaah have mercy on him, said: “I do not know of anyone among the Sahaabah and Taabi’een who narrated a report from the Messenger of Allaah (peace be upon him) without accepting it, adhering to it and affirming that this was sunnah. Those who came after the Taabi’een, and those whom we met did likewise: they all accepted the reports and took them to be sunnah, praising those who followed them and criticizing those who went against them. Whoever deviated from this path would be regarded by us as having deviated from the way of the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the scholars who followed them, and would be considered as one of the ignorant.

(4) Common sense indicates the importance of the Sunnah.

The fact that the Prophet (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allaah indicates that we must believe everything he said and obey every command he gave. It goes without saying that he has told us things and given instructions in addition to what is in the Qur’aan. It is futile to make a distinction between the Sunnah and the Qur’aan when it comes to adhering to it and responding to it. It is obligatory to believe in what he has told us, and to obey his instructions.

The ruling concerning those who deny the importance of the Sunnah is that they are kaafirs, because they deny and reject a well-known and undeniable part of the religion.

As regards your second question, about whether a Muslim is required to follow a particular madhhab, the answer is that he does not have to. For the average “rank and file” Muslim, his madhhab is that of his mufti or the scholar whom he consults for religious verdicts; he must ask those pious scholars whom he trusts for opinions when necessary. If a person has enough knowledge to distinguish which evidence and opinion is stronger, then he must follow the scholarly opinion which has the strongest support from the Qur’an and Sunnah. It is acceptable for a Muslim to follow one of the four well-known madhhabs, on the condition that he understands that the truth in any given issue may lie with another madhhab, in which case he must ignore his own madhhab’s opinion and follow the truth. The Muslim’s aim is to follow the truth that is in accordance with the Qur’an and Sunnah. The madhhabs of fiqh are only a means of reaching ahkaam (rules) based on the Qur’aan and Sunnah, they are not Qur’aan and Sunnah.

We ask Allaah to show us the truth and help us to follow it, and to show us falsehood and help us to avoid it. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

So in Summary we follow whatever Allah and His messenger has permitted. We follow his example of how to worship etc. So don't cheat, be nice to people, prayer like he did etc.

GENERAL TOPICS | BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS / Re: A Few Questions
« on: July 14, 2013, 01:22:46 PM »
AsalamuAlaikum,

1. From the Qur'an and the Sunnah yes Musical Instruments are haram.

Allah says in Luqmaan 31:6:

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Muhsin Khan]

"And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." [Saheeh International]

Many Sahaba (Companions of the Prophet (SAW)) and Taabi’in said that this refers to Musical instruments or Music.

For example Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: this means singing.  Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40).

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).

Ibn Mas`ud said "This -- by Allah -- refers to singing.'' (Tafseer Ibn Katheer)

In the footnotes of the Qur'an by Saheeh International it reads:

(Amusement of Speach) i.e. that which has no benefit. Described by different Sahahah as Shirk, Misleading Stories, Frivolous songs or Music but Includes all which distracts or diverts one from the Qur'an and Remembrance of Allah.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of the Sahaabah and Taabi’in, that ‘idle talk’ refers to singing, is sufficient. This was reported with saheeh isnaads from Ibn ‘Abbaas and Ibn Mas’ood. Abu’l-Sahbaa’ said: I asked Ibn Mas’ood about the aayah (interpretation of the meaning), ‘“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks’ [Luqmaan 31:6]. He said: By Allaah, besides Whom there is no other god, this means singing – and he repeated it three times. It was also reported with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that this means singing.

So this Ayat refers to Singing and Music as was understood by the Sahaba and those who followed them.

Allaah says:

â€œDo you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)?

And you laugh at it and weep not,

Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”

[al-Najm 53:59-61]

‘Ikrimah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: it was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that al-sumood [verbal noun from saamidoon, translated here as “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”] means “singing”

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning) “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” – Sufyaan al-Thawri said, narrating from his father from Ibn ‘Abbaas: (this means) singing. This is Yemeni (dialect): ismad lana means ghan lana [sing to us]. This was also the view of ‘Ikrimah. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer).

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

â€œAmong my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari  no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).

It was narrated from Abu Malik Ash’ari that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said:
“People among my nation will drink wine, calling it by another name, and musical instruments will be played for them and singing girls (will sing for them). Allah will cause the earth to swallow them up, and will turn them into monkeys and pigs.” ( Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 4156 Grade: Hasan)

It was narrated that Naafi’ (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Ibn ‘Umar heard a woodwind instrument, and he put his fingers in his ears and kept away from that path. He said to me, O Naafi’, can you hear anything? I said, No. So he took his fingers away from his ears and said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he heard something like this, and he did the same thing. (Saheeh Abi Dawood)

It was narrated that Al-Awza'i said:
"Umar bin 'Abdul-'Aziz wrote a letter to 'Umar bin Al-Walid in which he said: 'The share that your father gave to you was the entire Khumus, but the share that your father is entitled to is the same as that of any man among the Muslims, on which is due the rights of Allah and His Messenger, and of relatives, orphans, the poor and wayfarers. How many will dispute with your father on the Day of Resurrection! How can he be saved who has so many disputants? And your openly allowing musical instruments and wind instruments is an innovation in Islam. I was thinking of sending someone to you who would cut off your evil long hair."' (Sunan an-Nasa'i 4135 Graded Sahih)

However there is an exception.

The exception to the above is the daff – without any rings (i.e., a hand-drum which looks like a tambourine, but without any rattles) – when used by women on Eids and at weddings. This is indicated by authentic reports.

So in Summary due to the Verses of the Qur'an, statements of the Prophet SAW, Statements and Actions of the Sahaba and the Taabi’in Music is Haram.

The most clear cut evidence is the following hadith.

4. Yes tangible images and drawings are haram.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) told us that the one who makes images – by drawing or engraving –will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and these images whose makers are given this warning are images of animate beings, based on what its says in the hadeeth, that Allaah will say: “Give life to that which you have crated.”

It was narrated from ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Those who make images will be punished on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be said to them: ‘Bring to life that which you have created.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5607) and Muslim (2108).

It seems that images with incomplete features and those which do not have a nose or eyes are not included in the images that are haraam, and their makers are not included in the warning, because they cannot really be called images and these pictures are not competing with the creation of Allaah.

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Among the people who will be most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection will be those who imitate the creation of Allaah.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari (5610) and Muslim (2107).

Abdullaah ibn Mas'ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Those who will be most severely punished by Allaah on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers." (Reported by al-Bukhaari, see al-Fath, 10/382).

Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Allaah, may He be exalted, says: 'Who does more wrong than the one who tries to create something like My creation? Let him create a grain of wheat or a kernel of corn.'" (Reported by al-Bukhaari, see Fath al-Baari, 10/385).

'Ali (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: "Shall I not send you on the same mission as the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) sent me? Do not leave any built-up tomb without levelling it, and do not leave any picture in any house without erasing it." (Reported by Muslim and al-Nisaa'i; this is the version narrated by al-Nisaa'i).

Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Every image-maker will be in the Fire, and for every image that he made a soul will be created for him, which will be punished in the Fire." Ibn 'Abbaas said: "If you must do that, make pictures of trees and other inanimate objects." (Reported by Muslim, 3/1871)

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said:
"The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: 'Among the people who will be most severely punished on the Day of Resurrection will be the image-makers.'" (Sahih)

AsalamuAlaikum,

"It is well known for the Sri Pada, i.e., "sacred footprint", a 1.8 m (5 ft 11 in) rock formation near the summit, which in Buddhist tradition is held to be the footprint of the Buddha, in Hindu tradition that of Shiva and in Muslim and Christian tradition that of Adam, or that of St. Thomas."

"The mountain is most often scaled from December to May. During other months it is hard to climb the mountain due to very heavy rain, extreme wind, and thick mist.

For Buddhists, the footprint mark is the left foot of the Buddha, left behind when Buddha visited Sri Lanka, as a symbol for worship at the invitation of Buddhist God Saman.

Tamil Hindus consider it as the footprint of Lord Shiva. It is also fabled that the mountain is the legendary mount Trikuta the capital of Ravana during the Ramayana times from where he ruled Lanka.

Muslims and Christians in Sri Lanka ascribe it to where Adam, the first Ancestor, set foot as he was exiled from the Garden of Eden. The legends of Adam are connected to the idea that Sri Lanka was the original Eden, and in the Muslim tradition that Adam was 30 ft tall.

A shrine to Saman, a Buddhist "deity" (People who have spent spiritual life during their life on earth and done pacificism service to regions are deified by Sri Lankan Buddhists) charged with protecting the mountain top, can be found near the footprint."

Did our Prophet (SAW) mention this is an authentic hadith? No.

Do Buddhists say its Buddha's foot? Hindus say its Vishnu?  Others say its Adam? Yes.

So is it Adams? No. The prophet never said it was so we shouldnt say it is.

Allah knows best.

AsalamuAlaikum,

This is very common assertion but does it stand up?

Fistly no where in the Quran does it state that the Earth is fixed and doesn't move. Nor does it state that the Earth is at the centre of the Universe. Actually if you take a lexical analyse of the Quran many verses speak of the Movement of the Earth. Read - http://www.answering-christianity.com/egg-shaped_earth.htm undersection Ample vocabularies from my dictionaries regarding "Dah" and its circular shape and activities.

So what does the Quran say regarding the sun and moon and is it accurate? Well lets anaylse?

The Sun

Today Science tells us a lot about the Sun. We know it is floating in its own orbit around the Milky Way galaxy at a speed of 150mps. We know today that the sun rotates and we know that the sun produces its own light and that it will eventually extinguish and die. These are all recent advancements in the field of astronomy discovered with the use of telescopes and nuclear physics.

The Sun’s Orbit and Rotation

For a long time European philosophers and scientists believed that the Earth stood still in the centre of the universe and every other body including the sun moved around. In the west, this geocentric concept of the universe was prevalent right from the time of Ptolemy in the second century BC. The Qur’an however doesn’t contain any of these erroneous theories prevalent from the 2nd century to 15th century; it in facts speaks to the contrary as it speaks of the motion of the Earth in many verses (read -  http://www.answering-christianity.com/egg-shaped_earth.htm)  -  not once mentions the Earth at the centre of the universe with the sun orbiting around it.

In 1512, Nicholas Copernicus put forward his Heliocentric Theory of Planetary Motion, which asserted that the sun is motionless at the centre of the solar system with the planets revolving around it. In 1609, the German scientist Johannes Kepler published the ‘Astronomia Nova’. In this he concluded that not only do the planets move in elliptical orbits around the sun, they also rotate upon their axes at irregular speeds. With this knowledge it became possible for European scientists to explain correctly many of the mechanisms of the solar system including the sequence of night and day. After this it was the belief that the Sun was stationary at the centre of the solar system and didn’t rotate among astronomers right up until the 20th century. Dr Zakir Naik writes in his book ‘The Qur’an and Modern Science’ page 17:
“After these discoveries, it was thought that the Sun was stationary and did not rotate around its axis like the earth. I remember having studied this fallacy from geography books during my school days.”

It is now a well-established scientific fact that the Sun is not stationary, but is moving in an orbit around the centre of our Milky Way galaxy and is rotating. However only a couple of decades ago science taught the opposite that the Sun was stationary. Now let us see what the Qur’an said 1400 years ago before the telescope had even been invented.

The Qur’an declares the Sun is Floating in an Orbit

The Qur’an says:

“It is He who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) float each in its orbit.” [Surah 21:33]

Here the Qur’an clearly states that the Sun is floating in orbit. This is a truly remarkable statement found in a book from the 7th century. The Qur’an would have been wrong according to astronomers just a couple of decades ago. But we now know that the Qur’anic account of the Sun’s motion consistent with the modern Astronomy. I would also like to point to the fact that the Qur’an declares that the sun is floating, not riding on the back of a camel as you would expect from a 7th century nomad. Should we not ponder over the question: “What was the source of knowledge contained in the Qur’an?”

The Sun’s Individual Orbit in the Qur’an
[/b][/u]

The Qur’an says:
“It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) floats along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).” [Surah 36:40]

“The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed;” [Surah 55:5]

These verses mention an essential fact discovered by modern astronomy, i.e. the existence of the individual orbits of the Sun and the Moon, and their journey through space with their own motion. The popular translation of the Qur’an by Muhammad Asad and many other translations describe the Suns individual orbit further in the following verse:

“And [they have a sign in] the sun: it runs in an orbit of its own [and] that is laid down by the will of the Almighty, the All-Knowing;” [Surah 36:38] [Muhammad Asad]

“The sun runs along on a course of its own. Such is the design of the Powerful, the Aware!” [Surah 36:38] [T.B.Irving]

“While the sun keeps revolving in its orbit. This is the dispensation of the mighty, all-knowing (God).” [Surah 36:38] [Ahmed Ali]

The Qur’an Declares the Sun is Rotating

The Qur’an says:

“It is He who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) float each in its orbit.” [Surah 21:33]

The Arabic word used in the above verse is yasbahûn. The word yasbahûn is derived from the word sabaha. It carries with it the idea of motion that comes from any moving body. If you use the word for a man on the ground, it would not mean that he is rolling but would mean he is walking or running. If you use the word for a man in water it would not mean that he is floating but would mean that he is swimming. Similarly, if you use the word yasbah for a celestial body such as the sun it would not mean that it is only flying through space but would mean that it is also rotating as it goes through space. Most of the school textbooks have incorporated the fact that the sun rotates about its axis. The rotation of the sun about its own axis can be proved with the help of equipment that projects the image of the sun on the table top so that one can examine the image of the sun without being blinded. It is noticed that the sun has spots which complete a circular motion once every 25 days i.e. the sun takes approximately 25 days to rotate around its axis. It is quite remarkable that the Qur’an describes the Sun’s rotation.

The Sun creates its own light

The Sun is a massive thermonuclear reaction generating a tremendous amount of light and heat with a core temperature of around 10 million degrees.

The Sun creates its own light according to the Qur’an
The Qur’an says:

“It is He Who made the sun to be a shining glory…” [Surah 10:5]

“Blessed is He who has placed in the sky great stars and placed therein a [burning] lamp…” [Surah 25:61]

“And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?” [Surah 71:16]

The Arabic word for the sun in the Qur’an, is shams. It is referred to as siraaj, which means a ‘torch’ or as wahhaaj which means ‘a blazing lamp’ or as diya which means ‘shining glory’. All three descriptions are appropriate to the sun, since it generates intense heat and light by its internal combustion. The Qur’an clearly describes the Sun’s nature of creating its own light and heat.

THE SUN WILL EXTINGUISH AFTER A CERTAIN PERIOD ACCORDING TO THE QUR’AN

The light of the sun is due to a chemical process on its surface that has been taking place continuously for the past five billion years. It will come to an end at some point of time in the future when the sun will be totally extinguished leading to extinction of all life on earth. Scientists predict that the Sun’s hydrogen will start to become exhausted after 5 billion years. Regarding the impermanence of the sun’s existence the Qur’an says:

“And the Sun Runs its course For a period determined For it; that is The decree of (Him) The exalted in Might, The All-Knowing.” [Surah 36:38]

A similar message is conveyed in the Qur’an in 13:2, 35:13, 39:5 and 39:21. The Arabic word used here is mustaqarr, which means a place or time that is determined. Thus the Qur’an says that the sun runs on its course for a determined period time – meaning that it will end or extinguish.

Let Us Reflect

Again let us reflect on what we have discovered. We learnt that previously Science taught that the sun was stationary and didn’t rotate and only with a couple of decades ago modern astronomy incorporated that the Sun had a motion and was rotating. The Qur’an mentioned this 1400 years ago. We learnt of the Qur’ans description of the Sun’s individual orbit. We also learnt about how science tells us that the sun creates its own light and will eventually extinguish and end. But in the Qur’an it contained all this information 1400 years ago. This is truly an amazing miracle of the Qur’an. In this reflection I would like to point something out. In the Qur’an, there are a number of verses that refer to the sequence of the night and day, yet no mention is made of the movement of the Sun around the Earth. When it was considered that the most widely held view at the time was that the Earth was the centre of the Universe and that the sun moved around it, a human author of the Qur’an would not have failed to refer to the sun’s apparent movement around the Earth when discussing the sequence of the night and day.

“Have you not seen how Allah merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night.” [Surah 31:29]

In view of the state of knowledge at Muhammad’s day, it is inconceivable that the statements in the Qur’an which are connected with Astronomy could have been the work of a man, further highlighting the divine origin of the Qur’an.

The Moon
[/b][/u]

Today Science tells us a lot about the moon. We know that it is floating in space in its individual orbit around the Earth and also rotates. We have also learnt that the light of the moon is reflected light. Let us now see what the Qur’an says about the moon.

The Moon is floating in an orbit according to the Qur’an

The Qur’an says:

“It is He who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) float each in its orbit.” [Surah 21:33]

Here the Qur’an states that the Sun is floating in its orbit. This matches perfectly with modern Science.

The Moon’s individual orbit in the Qur’an

The Qur’an says:

“It is not permitted to the Sun to catch up the Moon, nor can the Night outstrip the Day: Each (just) floats along in (its own) orbit (according to Law).” [Surah 36:40]

“The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly) computed;” [Surah 55:5]

As explained earlier these verses mention an essential fact discovered by modern astronomy, i.e. the existence of the individual orbits of the Sun and the Moon, and their journey through space with their own motion.

The Moon Is rotating according to the Qur’an

The Qur’an says:

“It is He who created the Night and the Day, and the sun and the moon: all (the celestial bodies) float each in its orbit.” [Surah 21:33]

As explained earlier the Arabic word used in the above verse is yasbahûn. Similarly, if you use the word yasbah for a celestial body such as the moon it would not mean that it is only flying through space but would mean that it is also rotating as it goes through space. The moon rotates around its axis in the same duration that it takes to revolve around the earth. It takes approximately 29½ days to complete one rotation. One cannot help but be amazed at the scientific accuracy of the Qur’anic verses.

The Moon will end according to the Qur’an

The Qur’an highlights that the moon has a limited existence in the following verse:

“…God subjected the Sun and the Moon: each one runs its course to an appointed term…” [Surah 13:2]

The Light of the Moon is reflected light

Before we explore what the Qur’an says about the nature of the moon I want to point our attention to what we find in the Tafsir (interpretation of) Ibn Kahir, a prominent and leading Muslim scholar in the 13th century, and what he says about WHY THE MOON HAS DIFFERENT emissions OF LIGHT - from looking like a crecent, to a half moon to a full moon and all different shapes in between:

"The sun rises each day and sets at the end of the day, giving one kind of light all the time, but it moves, rising and setting at different points in the summer and winter, thus making the days and nights longer or shorter alternatively according to the season. Its authority is in the daytime, for it is the heavenly body that dominates the day. As for the moon, Allah has decreed that it should pass through different phases. At the beginning of the month, the moon appears small when it rises. It gives off little light, then on the second night its light increases and it rises to a higher position, and the higher it rises the more light it gives -- even though it is reflected from the sun -- until it becomes full on the fourteenth night of the month." (http://www.tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=36&tid=43568)

"He created the night with its darkness and the day with its light, and they alternate without ceasing. And He created the sun with its shining light, and the moon with its reflected light. and He allotted their stages and gave them separate orbits in the heavens." (http://www.tafsir.com/default.asp?sid=41&tid=46752......First big paragraph)

On the commentary of Surah 25:61 Ibn Kathir writes the following:
“(and a moon giving light.) means, shining and illuminated by the light of something else, different from the light of the sun, as Allah says...” (http://www.qtafsir.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2384&Itemid=80)

So why would Ibn Kathir come up with this statement, many centuries before man discovered that the earth was spherical and that the moon does indeed reflect the sun's light?

This is because the Qur’an says:

“And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?” [Surah 71:16]

“It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light and determined for it phases - that you may know the number of years and account [of time]. Allah has not created this except in truth. He details the signs for a people who know” [Surah 10:5]

“Blessed is He Who has made in the heaven mansions of stars and has placed therein a Lamp producing light and a moon that reflects light.” [Surah 25:61]

Here the Qur’an states that the light of the moon is reflected light or derived light. The Arabic word for the sun in the Qur’an, is shams. It is referred to as siraaj, which means a ‘torch’ or aswahhaaj which means ‘a blazing lamp’ or as diya which means ‘shining glory’. All three descriptions are appropriate to the sun, since it generates intense heat and light by its internal combustion. The Arabic word for the moon is qamar and it is described in the Qur’an as muneer, which is a body that gives nur i.e. light. Again, the Qur’anic description matches perfectly with the true nature of the moon, which does not give off light itself and is an inert body that reflects the light of the sun. Not once in the Qur’an, is the moon mentioned as siraaj, wahhaaj or diya or the sun as nur or muneer. This implies that the Qur’an recognizes the difference between the nature of sunlight and moonlight.

نور  (noor):  بيّن (bayyan)  reveal, reflect.

إستنار به (istanaara bihi): إستمدّ شعاعة  (istamadda shu'aaa'uh) was supplied by its light.

انار المكان (anaara al-makaan):  وضع فيه النور (wada'aa feehi al-noor)  Put light into it, or reflected light off of it.

نوّرتِ الشجرو انارت ايضاً (nawwarat al-shajarah wa anaarat aydan):  اخرجت نورها (akhrajat nooraha) The plant reflected the light off of itself, or it showed the light off of itself.  However, plants, as we know, are not a source of light.

انار النبت (anaara al-nabtu):  ظهر و حسن (tha-hara wa hasan)  the plant was revealed well from light.

نور (noor):  be revealed, to be lighted, to receive light.

So clearly, when the Qur’an Said that the sun is ضياء (diyaa'a), a source of light, and the moon a نورا , then clearly the moon:
1- Is reflecting to light, because it is إستمدّ شعاعة (was supplied by light), as this is the meaning of إستنار , which is derived from the root word نور  noor.
2- Is reflecting to light, because it is ظهر و حسن (was revealed well from light) , as this is the meaning of  انار , as in  انار النبت.
3- Is reflecting to light, because it receives light from the sun and it is lighted and revealed by it.

Also according to Quranic Arabic Corpus, a word by word linguistic analyse of the Qur’an, states that the Arabic word nūran used in Surah 10:5 and Surah 71:16 means reflected light. (http://corpus.quran.com/wordmorphology.jsp?location=%2810:5:7%29)

This is why the 13th century scholar talked about the moon having reflected light. Also this is why the very accurate translation by Saheeh International reads as the following:

“And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?” [Saheeh International] [Surah 71:16]

“It is He who made the sun a shining light and the moon a derived light…” [Saheeh International] Surah 10:5]

And Muhammad Asad’s translation reads as the following:
“and has set up within them the moon as a light [reflected] and set up the sun as a [radiant] lamp?” [Muhammad Asad] [Surah 71:16]

“He it is who has made the sun a [source of] radiant light and the moon a light [reflected]…” [Muhammad Asad] [Surah 10:5]

“CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, and the moon as it reflects the sun!”[Muhammad Asad] [Surah 91:1-2]

And that so many other translations read as follows:
“He it is Who has placed the sun for radiance and the moon for (reflected) light…” [T.B.Irving] [Surah 10:5]

“HE it is WHO made the sun radiate a brilliant light and the moon reflect a lustre…” [Sher Ali] [Surah 10:5]

“He it is who made the sun a source of radiant light and the moon a light [reflected]…” [Sayyid Qutb] [Surah 10:5]

“He it is Who has made the sun a radiant, illuminating light, and the moon a light reflected…” [Ali Unal] [Surah 10:5]

“He it is Who made the sun (radiate) brilliant light and the moon (reflect) a lustre…” [Amatul Rahman Omar] [Surah 10:5]

“He it is Who appointed the sun as a brilliant light and the moon as a reflected light” [Dr. Kamal Omar] [Surah 10:5]

“It is He Who made the Sun to be a shining light, and the Moon to be a reflected light…” [Bilal Muhammad][Surah 10:5]

“He is the One who made the sun to emit light, and the moon to reflect it…” [Progressive Muslims] [Surah 10:5]

“He is the One Who has made the sun a source of light and the moon to reflect the light…” [ Bijan Moeinian] [Surah 10:5]

“‘And He has set up within them the moon as a light (reflected), and has set up the sun as a lamp.” [Ali Unal] [Surah 71:16]

“And the moon as it follows it (reflecting its light)” [Ali Unal] [Surah 91:2]

“And the moon when it borrows light from it (- the sun)” [Amatul Rahman Omar] [Surah 91:2]

“And the Moon that borrows its light.” [Shabbir Ahmed] [Surah 91:2]

“And the moon that trails (and reflects) its light.” [Dr.Munir Munshey] [Surah 91:2]

“And the moon when she borrows light from him!” [Maulana Muhammad Ali] [Surah 91:2]

“Blessed is He Who has placed stars in the heaven and has set in it the glowing sun (that produces light) and the glittering moon (that reflects light).” [Amatul Rahman Omar] [Surah 25:61]

““Blessed is He Who has made in the heaven mansions of stars and has placed therein a Lamp producing light and a moon that reflects light.” [Sher Ali] [Surah 25:61]

In Summary the Qur’an accurately describes the true nature of the moon’s light well ahead before the discovery that the moon in fact reflects the light on the sun. How could anyone from the 7th century accurately describe the true nature of the moon?

“And made the moon therein a [reflected] light and made the sun a burning lamp?” [Surah 71:16]

So as we can see the Qur'an accuretly desribes every aspect of the Sun, Moon and Earth

Hope this helps.

AsalamuAlaikum,

From my understanding, and Allah knows best, the caravans were carrying goods which the meccans had stolen from the Muslims.

Regardless the Meccans were people who tortured the Muslims for years. Sent armies to there doors. Killed friends and family of the muslims.

Counter question. How do you deal with the overwhelming level of scientific miracles of the Quran?

Asalamualaikum,

Its my first ramadam to!! After reverting to Islam 11 months ago. Alhamdulillah.

We seem to have a similar story except I was athiest. I would go on anti-islam sites trying to deny the miracle of the Quran.

And it generslly worked due to my arrogance. But when I decided to go to my local mosque and listen to what they havr to say. I heard the recitation of the quran and that veil of arrogance was removed from my heart and I could deny no longer.
May Allah keep us steadfast in the religion ameen.

May Allah make your ramadam easy! Ameen!
