Preservation and Literary Challenge of the Qur’ān

Memorization

‘In the ancient times, when writing was scarcely used, memory and oral transmission was exercised and strengthened to a degree now almost unknown.’[1886] relates Michael Zwettler. It was in to this 'oral' society that Prophet Muhammad was born. During its revelation, which spanned twenty three years, not only did the Prophet teach the Qur’ān, he memorized it entirely himself as did many of his Companions amongst them; Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Ali, Ibn Masud, Abu Hurairah, Abdullah bin Abbas, Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As, Aisha, Hafsa, and Umm Salama. The Angel Gabriel would spend every night in the month of Ramadhan with the Prophet, on a yearly basis, to refresh his Qur’ānic memory.

The lives of Muslims revolved solely around the Qur’ān; they would memorize it, teach it, recite portions from it every day for their obligatory Prayers – and many would stand a third of the night in prayer reciting from it.  There existed so many memorizers of the Qur’ān, that it was considered strange to find a family without someone amongst them who had not memorized the Qur’ān entirely.

As time progressed, literally thousands of schools were opened devoted specifically to the teaching of the Qur’ān to children for the purpose of memorization. The teachers in these schools would have unbroken Tazkiya’s [authoritative chains of learning] going back to the Prophet himself through his many Companions – and this system exists even today.

Indeed, we live in a world where there are millions of memorizers of the Qur’ān, scattered in every city and country spanning the whole globe. These memorizers range from ages 6 and up; males, females, Arabs, non-Arabs, blacks, whites, Orientals, rich and poor.

There does not exist a single book, secular or religious, which has as many memorizers of it, as the Qur’ān. In reality, if one considers the ‘greatest’ writings of the world; Old and New Testament, Aristotle, Plato, Shakespeare, Orwell, Marx, Dickens, Machiavelli, Sun Tzu etc.– one may ask, how many people have memorized them? Seldom do we find a single individual.

Hypothetically, if we were loose all the books of the world, by throwing them into the sea for instance, the only book we could resurrect entirely word-for-word would be the Qur’ān – and, amazingly, it could be done simultaneously in every country of the world within twenty-four hours.

Kenneth Cragg writes, “This phenomenon of Qur’ānic recital means that the text has traversed the centuries in an unbroken living sequence of devotion. It cannot, therefore, be handled as an antiquarian thing, nor as a historical document out of a distant past. The fact of Hifdh (Qur’ānic Memorization) has made the Qur’ān a present possession through all the lapse of Muslim time and given it a human currency in every generation never allowing its relegation to a bare authority for reference alone.”[1887]

Written Text

The entire Qur’ān was in writing at the time of revelation from the Prophet’s dictation by some of his literate companions, the most prominent of them being Zayd ibn Thabit.[1888] Others among his noble scribes were Ubayy ibn Ka’b, Ibn Mas’ud, Mu’awiyah ibn Abu Sufyan, Khalid ibn Waleed and Zubayr ibn Awwam.[1889] The verses were recorded on leather, parchment, scapulae (shoulder bones of animals) and the stalks of date palms.[1890]

The codification of the Qur’ān (i.e. into a ‘single book form’) was done soon after the Battle of Yamamah (11AH/633CE), after the Prophet’s death and during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr. Many companions became martyrs in that battle, and it was feared that unless a written copy of the entire revelation was produced, large parts of the Qur’ān might be lost with the death of those who had memorized it. Therefore, at the suggestion of Umar to collect the Qur’ān in the form of writing, Zayd ibn Thabit was requested by Abu Bakr to head a committee which would gather together the scattered recordings of the Qur’ān and prepare a mushaf - loose sheets which bore the entire revelation on them.[1891] To safeguard the compilation from errors, the committee accepted only material which had been written down in the presence of the Prophet himself, and which could be verified by at least two reliable witnesses who had actually heard the Prophet recite the passage in question[1892]. Once completed and unanimously approved of by the Prophet’s Companions, these sheets were kept with the Caliph Abu Bakr (d. 13AH/634CE), then passed on to the Caliph Umar (13-23AH/634-644CE), and then Umar’s daughter and the Prophet’s widow, Hafsa.[1893]

The third Caliph Uthman (23AH-35AH/644-656CE) requested Hafsa to send him the manuscript of the Qur’ān which was in her safekeeping, and ordered the production of several bounded copies of it (masaahif, sing. mushaf). This task was entrusted to the Companions Zayd ibn Thabit, Abdullah ibn Az-Zubair, Sa’eed ibn As-’As, and Abdur-Rahman ibn Harith ibn Hisham.[1894] Upon completion (in 25AH/646CE), Uthman returned the original manuscript to Hafsa and sent the copies to the major Islāmic provinces.

A number of non-Muslim scholars who have studied the issue of the compilation and preservation of the Qur’ān have also stated its authenticity. John Burton, at the end of his substantial work on the Qur’ān’s compilation, states that the Qur’ān as we have it today is:

“…the text which has come down to us in the form in which it was organized and approved by the Prophet…. What we have today in our hands is the mushaf of Muhammad.”[1895]

Kenneth Cragg describes the transmission of the Qur’ān from the time of revelation to today as occurring in “an unbroken living sequence of devotion.”[1896] Schwally concurs that:
“As far as the various pieces of revelation are concerned, we may be confident that their text has been generally transmitted exactly as it was found in the Prophet’s legacy.” [1897]

The historical credibility of the Qur’ān is further established by the fact that one of the copies sent out by the Caliph Uthman is still in existence today. It lies in the Museum of the City of Tashkent in Uzbekistan, Central Asia.[1898] According to Memory of the World Program, UNESCO, an arm of the United Nations, ‘it is the definitive version, known as the Mushaf of Uthman.”[1899]

This manuscript, held by the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan, is the earliest existent written version of the Qur’ān. It is the definitive version, known as the Mushaf of Uthman.[1900]

A facsimile of the mushaf in Tashkent is available at the Columbia University Library in the United States of America and the Topkapi Museum, Turkey.
A copy of the mushaf sent to Syria (duplicated before a fire in 1310AH/1892CE destroyed the Jaami’ Masjid where it was housed) also exists in the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul,[1901] and an early manuscript on gazelle parchment exists in Dar al-Kutub as-Sultaniyyah in Egypt.

This manuscript held at the Topkapi Museum in Istanbul can be dated back to the late 1st century Hijri.

This Qur’ānic manuscript is housed at the al-Hussein mosque in Cairo and is amongst the oldest of all the manuscripts, and is either Uthmanic or an exact copy from the original.

More ancient manuscripts from all periods of Islāmic history, found in the Library of Congress in Washington, the Chester Beatty Museum in Dublin (Ireland) and the London Museum, have been compared with those in Tashkent, Turkey and Egypt, with results confirming that there have not been any changes in the text from its original time of writing and is proof that the text of the Qur’ān we have in circulation today is identical with that of the time of the Prophet and his companions.

The Institute for Koranforschung, for example, in the University of Munich (Germany), collected over 42,000 complete or incomplete ancient copies of the Qur’ān. After around fifty years of research, they reported that there was no variance between the various copies, except the occasional mistakes of the copyist which could easily be ascertained. This Institute was unfortunately destroyed by bombs during WWII.[1902]

Thus, due to the efforts of the early companions, with God’s assistance, the Qur’ān as we have it today is recited in the same manner as it was revealed. This makes it the only religious scripture that is still completely retained and understood in its original language. Indeed, as Sir William Muir states, “There is probably no other book in the world which has remained twelve centuries (now fourteen) with so pure a text.”[1903]

The evidence above confirms God’s promise in the Qur’ān:

“Indeed, it is We who sent down the Qur’ān and indeed, We will be its guardian.”
Qur’ān 15:9

The Qur’ān has been preserved in both oral and written form in a way no other book has, with each form providing a check and balance for the authenticity of the other.[1904]

New Testament Prophecy

John 14:16  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.
In this verse, Jesus promises that another Comforter will appear, and thus, we must discuss some issues concerning this Comforter.
The Greek word paravklhto,ho parakletos, has been translated as Comforter.Parakletosmore precisely means one who pleads anothers cause, an intercessor.Theho parakletosis a person in the Greek language, not an in corporealentity.  In the Greek language, every noun possesses gender; that is, it is masculine, feminine or neutral.  In the Gospel of John, Chapters 14, 15and 16 theho parakletosis actually a person.  All pronouns in Greek must agree in gender with the word to which they refer and the pronounhe is used when referring to theparakletos.  The New Testament uses the wordpneuma, which means breath or spirit, the Greekequivalent ofruah, the Hebrew word for spirit used in the Old Testament.Pneumais a grammatically neutral word and is always represented by the pronoun it.
All present day Bibles are compiled from ancient manuscripts, the oldest dating back to the fourth century C.E.  No two ancient manuscripts are identical. All Bibles today are produced by combining manuscripts with no single definitive reference.  The Bible translators attempt to choose the correct version.  In other words, since they do not know which ancient manuscript is the correct one, they decide for us which version for a given verse to accept.  Take John 14:26 as an example.  John 14:26 is the only verse of the Bible which associates theParakletoswith the Holy Spirit.  But the ancient manuscripts are not in agreement that the Parakletosis the Holy Spirit.  For instance, the famous Codex Syriacus, written around the fifth century C.E., and discovered in 1812 on Mount Sinai, the text of 14:26 reads; Paraclete, the Spirit; and not Paraclete, theHoly Spirit.
Muslim scholars state that what Jesus actually said in Aramaic represents more closely the Greek wordperiklytoswhich means the admired one. In Arabic the word Muhammad means the praiseworthy, admired one. In other words, periklytosisMuhammad in Greek.  We have two strong reasons in its support. First, due to several documented cases of similar word substitution in the Bible, it is quite possible that both words were contained in the original text but were dropped by a copyist because of the ancient custom of writing words closely packed, with no spaces in between.  In such a case the original reading would have been, and He will give you another comforter (parakletos),the admirable one (periklytos).  Second, we have the reliable testimony of at least four Muslim authorities from different eras who ascribedadmired, praised one as a possible meaning of the Greek or Syriac word to Christians scholars.
The following are some who attest that the Paraclete is indeed an allusion to Prophet Muhammad,
TheFirst Witness

Anselm Turmeda(1352/55-1425 C.E.), a priest and Christian scholar, was a witness to the prophecy. After accepting Islām he wrote the book,Tuhfat al-arib fi al-radd ala Ahlal-Salib.
TheSecond Witness

Abdul-Ahad Dawud, wasthe former Rev. David Abdu Benjamin Keldani, BD, a Roman Catholic priest of theUniate-Chaldean sect..  After accepting Islām, he wrote the book,Muhammad in the Bible.  He writes in this book: There is not the slightest doubt that by Periqlyte, Prophet Muhammad, i.e. Ahmad, is intended.
TheThird Witness

Commenting on the verse where Jesus predicts the coming of Prophet Muhammad:
a messenger who shall come after me, whose name shall be Ahmad
Qurān 61:6
Asad explains that the word Parakletos:
[it] is almost certainly a corruption of Periklytos (the Much-Praised), an exact Greek translation of the Aramaic term or name Mawhamana.  (It is to be borne in mind that Aramaic was the language used in Palestine at the time of, and for some centuries after Jesus and was thus undoubtedly the language in which the original - now lost - texts of the Gospels were composed.) In view of the phonetic closeness of Periklytos and Parakletos it is easy to understand how the translator - or, more probably, a later scribe - confused these two expressions.  It is significant that both the Aramaic Mawhamana and the Greek Periklytos have the same meaning as the two names of the Last Prophet,Muhammad and Ahmad, both of which are derived from the Hebrew verb hamida (he praised) and the Hebrew noun hamd (praise).
Holy spirit or Prophet?
Why is it important?  It is significant because in biblical language a spirit, simply means a prophet.
Beloved, believe note very spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
It is instructive to know that several biblical scholars consideredparakletosto be anindependent salvific (having the power to save) figure, not the Holy Ghost.
Let us further study whether Jesusparakletos, Comforter, was a Holy Ghost or a person (a prophet) to come after him?  When we continue reading beyond chapter 14:16and chapter 16:7, we find that Jesus predicts the specific details of the arrival and identity of theparakletos.  Therefore, according to the context of John 14 & 16 we discover the following facts.

1.Jesus said the parakletos is a human being:

John 16:13 He will speak.
John 16:7 for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you.
It is impossible that the Comforter be the Holy Ghost because the Holy Ghost was present long before Jesus and during his ministry.
John 16:13 Jesus referred to the paraclete as he and not it seven times, no other verse in the Bible contains seven masculine pronouns.  Therefore, paracleteisa person, not a ghost.
2.Jesus is called a parakletos:

And if any man sin, we have an advocate(parakletos) with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. (1 John 2:1)
Here we see that parakletos is a physical and human intercessor.
3.The Divinity of Jesus a later innovation:

Jesus was not accepted as divine until the Council of Nicea, 325 C.E., but everyone, except Jews, agree he was a prophet of God, as indicated by the Bible:
Matthew 21:11 ...This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
Luke 24:19 ...Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people.
4.Jesus prayed to God for another parakletos:

John 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another parakletos.
5. Jesus describes the function of the other Parakletos:

John 16:13 He will guide you into all the truth.
God says in the Qurān:
O mankind!  The Messenger has now come unto you with the truth from your Lord, so believe; it is better for you
Qurān 4:170
John 16:14 He will glorify Me.
The Qurān brought by Muhammad glorifies Jesus:
[And mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed God gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to God].
Qurān 3:45
The Prophet Muhammad also glorified Jesus, Hesaid Whoever testifies that none deserves worship except God, who has no partner, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, and that Jesus is the servant of God, His Messenger, and His Word which He bestowed in Mary, and a spirit created from Him, and that Paradise is true, and that Hell is true, God will admit him into Paradise, according to his deeds.
John 16:8 he will convince the world of its sin,and of Gods righteousness, and of the coming judgment.
The Qurān announces:
They have certainly disbelieved who say, "God is the Messiah, the son of Mary" while the Messiah has said, "O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord." Indeed, he who associates others with God - God has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
Qurān 5:72
John 16:13 he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, [that] shall he speak.
The Qurān says of Prophet Muhammad:
Nor doeshe speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed.

Qurān 53:3-4
John 14:26and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
The words of the Qurān:
while the Messiah has said, O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord.
Qurān 5:72
reminds people of the first and greatest command of Jesus they have forgotten: The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord. (Mark 12:29)
John 16:13 and He will disclose to you what is to come.

The Qurān states:
That is from the news of the unseen which We reveal, [O Muhammad], to you
Qurān 12:102
Hudhaifa, a companion of Prophet Muhammad, tells us: The Prophet once delivered a speech in front of us wherein he left nothing but mentioned everything that would happen till the Hour (of Judgment).
John 14:16 that he may abide with you for ever.
meaning his original teachings will remain forever. Muhammad was Gods last prophet to humanity. His teachings are perfectly preserved. He lives in the hearts and minds of his adoring followers who worship God in his exact imitation. No man, including Jesus or Muhammad, has an eternal life on earth.Parakletosis not an exception either. This cannot be an allusion to the Holy Ghost, for present day creed of the Holy Ghost did not exist until the Council of Chalcedon, in 451 C.E., four and half centuries after Jesus.
John 14:17 he will be the spirit of truth...meaning he will be a true prophet, see 1 John 4: 1-3.
John 14:17 the world neither sees him...
Many people in the world today do not know Muhammad.
John 14:17 ...nor knows him
Fewer people recognise the real Muhammad, Gods Prophet of Mercy.
John 14:26 the Advocate (parakletos)
Prophet Muhammad will be the advocate of humanity at large and of sinful believers on Judgment Day.People will look for those who can intercede on their behalf to God to reduce the distress and suffering on the Day of Judgment.  Adam, Noah, Abraham,Moses and Jesus will excuse themselves. Then they will come to the ProphetMuhammad and he will say, I am the one who is able.  So he will intercede for the people in the Great Plain of Gathering, so judgment may be passed.  This is the Station of Praise God promises Him in the Qurān:
It may be that your Lord will raise you to the Station of Praise (the honour of intercession on the Day of Resurrection)
Qurān17:79
The Prophet Muhammad said:My intercession will be for those of my nation who committed major sins.and I shall be the first intercessor in Paradise

And I apologise brother. Walakumasalam!
And some genuine advice brother if someone quotes you a hadith. Ask for a reference and a grading. If its grading is weak or it is fabricated dont accept it.

290
Jazak Allah Khairan for the link tho brother.

291
Are there any old manuscript of Hadiths books?

Yes many. I know when you buy copies of the hadith collections they contain pictures of them. I dont know any website links however on this.

Do a google search on manuscripts you may find them.
Is there any definite number of Hadith?

Logic dictates yes. As you cannot have q chain of Narration from now to the prophet saw that would be like 28+ preople.

Now new hadith collections can be made. E.g Sahih Abu dawud by Skeikh Al-Albani which is all the authentic hadith from Sunan Abu Dawud. But none of these Hadith are 'new'.

There are many hadith collections some authentic some not. So hadith always need to be graded.

You can check grades here www.sunnah.com

As for the claim hadith can be added. This completely false and a lie. Yes hadith can be fabricated but no authentic hadith can just be made up or added to like Sahih Bukhari Etc.

As for saying that the hadith of tall building being "added". Complete lies its found in many collections of hadith e.g sunan an nasai , ibn majah etc.
Simply say bring your proof for your claim. Show me its been added etc.

As for hadith I dont know lots about the science. If your interested then read :

And Allah Knows Best.

[All] praise is [due] to Allah , Lord of the worlds [Quran 1:1]

Allah is the lord of Everything. Aliens could exist - they may not.
Either way Allah is the lord of them.
As for Allah specifically mentioning aliens the Quran is blank - mainly because thats not the purpose of the Quran.

As for verses talking about ruling over everything, all creations, all worlds then the verses are many.

But we shouldnt spend to much time pondering on it. The Quran is there for us to learn about Allah and how to live in submission to him.

And Allah Knows Best.

GENERAL TOPICS | BOARD ANNOUNCEMENTS / Re: Views on music
« on: June 19, 2013, 04:47:10 PM »
From my understanding of the Qur'an and the Sunnah yes Musical Instruments are haram.

Allah says in Luqmaan 31:6:

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Muhsin Khan]

"And of the people is he who buys the amusement of speech to mislead [others] from the way of Allah without knowledge and who takes it in ridicule. Those will have a humiliating punishment." [Saheeh International]

Many Sahaba (Companions of the Prophet (SAW)) and Taabi’in said that this refers to Musical instruments or Music.

For example Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: this means singing.  Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40).

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).

Ibn Mas`ud said "This -- by Allah -- refers to singing.'' (Tafseer Ibn Katheer)

In the footnotes of the Qur'an by Saheeh International it reads:

(Amusement of Speach) i.e. that which has no benefit. Described by different Sahahah as Shirk, Misleading Stories, Frivolous songs or Music but Includes all which distracts or diverts one from the Qur'an and Remembrance of Allah.

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of the Sahaabah and Taabi’in, that ‘idle talk’ refers to singing, is sufficient. This was reported with saheeh isnaads from Ibn ‘Abbaas and Ibn Mas’ood. Abu’l-Sahbaa’ said: I asked Ibn Mas’ood about the aayah (interpretation of the meaning), ‘“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks’ [Luqmaan 31:6]. He said: By Allaah, besides Whom there is no other god, this means singing – and he repeated it three times. It was also reported with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that this means singing.

So this Ayat refers to Singing and Music as was understood by the Sahaba and those who followed them.

Allaah says:

â€œDo you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)?

And you laugh at it and weep not,

Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”

[al-Najm 53:59-61]

‘Ikrimah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: it was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that al-sumood [verbal noun from saamidoon, translated here as “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”] means “singing”

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning) “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” – Sufyaan al-Thawri said, narrating from his father from Ibn ‘Abbaas: (this means) singing. This is Yemeni (dialect): ismad lana means ghan lana [sing to us]. This was also the view of ‘Ikrimah. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer).

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

â€œAmong my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari  no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).

It was narrated from Abu Malik Ash’ari that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said:
“People among my nation will drink wine, calling it by another name, and musical instruments will be played for them and singing girls (will sing for them). Allah will cause the earth to swallow them up, and will turn them into monkeys and pigs.” ( Sunan Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith 4156 Grade: Hasan)

It was narrated that Naafi’ (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Ibn ‘Umar heard a woodwind instrument, and he put his fingers in his ears and kept away from that path. He said to me, O Naafi’, can you hear anything? I said, No. So he took his fingers away from his ears and said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he heard something like this, and he did the same thing. (Saheeh Abi Dawood)

It was narrated that Al-Awza'i said:
"Umar bin 'Abdul-'Aziz wrote a letter to 'Umar bin Al-Walid in which he said: 'The share that your father gave to you was the entire Khumus, but the share that your father is entitled to is the same as that of any man among the Muslims, on which is due the rights of Allah and His Messenger, and of relatives, orphans, the poor and wayfarers. How many will dispute with your father on the Day of Resurrection! How can he be saved who has so many disputants? And your openly allowing musical instruments and wind instruments is an innovation in Islam. I was thinking of sending someone to you who would cut off your evil long hair."' (Sunan an-Nasa'i 4135 Graded Sahih)

However there is an exception.

The exception to the above is the daff – without any rings (i.e., a hand-drum which looks like a tambourine, but without any rattles) – when used by women on Eids and at weddings. This is indicated by authentic reports.

So in Summary due to the Verses of the Qur'an, statements of the Prophet SAW, Statements and Actions of the Sahaba and the Taabi’in Music is Haram.

AsalamuAlaikum

Can you post there claims please?

Jazak Allah Khairan

296
AsalamuAlaikum,

The refutation to this is where is your proof. Theyve made a claim provide the proof. If no proof is given then its just a caim and it should be ignored. Insha'Allah this helps.

297
AsalamuAlaikum,

They've listed a lot of stuff here. But have they provided any  references or proofs? Any links to eygpytologists? No. So this argument carries no weight. It could be the ramblings of a mad man without any proof. I would just sincerely ask them to provide any proof for there claims. I could claim well the Qur'an includes Moses so some Jewish people in medina wrote the Qur'an. Any references or proofs? Nope just a cool idea.

WalakumAsalam.

In Islam / Extra wife beating resources
« on: March 17, 2013, 07:10:08 AM »
Hey. I was reading through your "wife beating in Islam" section. And i thought i would provide some extra resources if you would like to add them to the page. Theres alot but here we go:

Wife beating is prohibited in Islam
The question has arose is Wife Beating allowed in Islam? Lets take a look:

Firstly I would like to note that it is prohibited to lie in Islam. Everything presented here is to the best of my knowledge and Allah knows Best:
"Oh you who believe! Be afraid of Allah, and be with those who are true (in words and deeds.)" (Quran 9:119)

Allah's Messenger (sallalahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said:"There are four signs of a hypocrite; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; when he is trusted, he betrays his trust; and when he quarrels, he abuses." [Al-Bukhari & Muslim, narrated by Abu Huraira]

Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6307:
'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: “Truth leads one to Paradise and virtue leads one to Paradise and the person tells the truth until he is recorded as truthful, and lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell, and the person tells a lie until he is recorded as a liar.”

Now let me address the issue:

Many times in the Hadith's and Qur'an we are told about restraining our anger:

Allah Almighty loves those who restrain anger: "Those who spend (freely), whether in prosperity, or in adversity; who restrain anger, and pardon (all) men; for Allah loves those who do good.”  (The Noble Quran, 3:134)

Narrated Abu Huraira: "Allah's Apostle(SAW) said, 'The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger.”  (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), Volume 8, Book 73, Number 135)

Narrated Abu Huraira: "A man said to the Prophet , 'Advise me! 'The Prophet said, 'Do not become angry and furious.' The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet said in each case, 'Do not become angry and furious.”   (Translation of Sahih Bukhari, Good Manners and Form (Al-Adab), Volume 8, Book 73, Number 137)"

Abu Hurairah related that the Messenger of Allah(sallallahu ‘alayhi wasallam) said: "A strong person is not the person who throws his adversaries to the ground. A strong person is the person who contains himself when he is angry." [Al-Bukhari; Book 47, No. 47.3.12]

Abu Huraira reported: "I heard Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: One is not strong because of one's wrestling skillfully. They said: Allah's Messenger, then who is strong? He said: He who controls his anger when he is in a fit of rage.”  (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Virtue, Good Manners and Joining of the Ties of Relationship (Kitab Al-Birr was-Salat-I-wa'l-Adab), Book 032, Number 6314)

That we should always respond to a bad act with a good act and to behave well with people:

On the authority of Abu Dharr Jundub ibn Junadah, and Abu 'Abd-ir-Rahman Mu'adh bin Jabal (ra) that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said : “Have Taqwa (Fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people.”[Tirmidhi]

So as we can see Muslims are told to restrain there anger and to respond to a bad action with a good deed.

Muslims are taught to love and help each other:
Sahih Muslim Book 32, Number 6258:
Nu'man b. Bashir reported:
Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: “The similitude of believers in regard to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body; when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and fever. “

Sahih Bukhari,Volume 8, Book 73, Number 40:
Narrated An-Nu'man bin Bashir:
Allah's Apostle said, "You see the believers as regards their being merciful among
themselves and showing love among themselves and being kind, resembling one body, so
that, if any part of the body is not well then the whole body shares the sleeplessness
(insomnia) and fever with it."

Sahih Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 67:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, "None will have the sweetness (delight) of Faith till he loves a person
and loves him only for Allah's sake”

The Prophet (sallalahu 'alayhe wa sallam) said: "The best amongst you are those who have the best manners and character." [Al-Bukhari]

It is also important to point out that oppression is prohibited in Islam:
Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6246
Narrated Abu Dharr:
Allah’s Messenger, peace be upon him, said: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said:
“O My servants, I have forbidden oppression for Myself and have made it forbidden amongst you, so do not oppress one another.
O My servants, all of you are astray except for those I have guided, so seek guidance of Me and I shall guide you.
O My servants, all of you are hungry except for those I have fed, so seek food of Me and I shall feed you.
O My servants, all of you are naked except for those I have clothed, so seek clothing of Me and I shall clothe you.
O My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins, so seek forgiveness of Me and I shall forgive you.
O My servants, you will not attain harming Me so as to harm Me, and you will not attain benefiting Me so as to benefit Me.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to become as pious as the most pious heart of any one man of you, that would not increase My kingdom in anything.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the jinn of you to be as wicked as the most wicked heart of any one man of you, that would not decrease My kingdom in anything.
O My servants, were the first of you and the last of you, the human of you and the
jinn of you to rise up in one place and make a request of Me, and were I to give everyone what he requested, that would not decrease what I have, any more than a needle decreases the sea if put into it.
O My servants, it is but your deeds that I reckon up for you and then recompense you for, so let him who finds good praise Allah, and let him who finds other than that blame no one but himself.” Sa’id said that when Abu Idris narrated this hadith he knelt upon his knees.”

Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6248:
Jabir b. Abdullah reported:
that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: “Be on your guard against committing oppression, for oppression is a darkness on the Day of Resurrection, and be on your guard against pettimindedness for pettimindedness destroyed those who were before you, as it incited them to shed blood and make lawful what was unlawful for them.”

Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6251:
Abu Huraira reported:
Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: “Do you know who is poor? They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: A poor man amongst us is one who has neither dirham with him nor wealth. He (the Holy Prophet) said: The poor of my Umma would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers and fasts and Zakat but (he would find himself bankrupt on that day as he would have exhausted his funds of virtues) since he hurled abuses upon others, brought calumny against others and unlawfully consumed the wealth of others and shed the blood of others and beat others, and his virtues would be credited to the account of one (who suffered at his hand). And if his good deeds fall short to clear the account, then his sins would be entered in (his account) and he would be thrown in the Hell-Fire.”

Also there is an underlying theme that is the basis of the Islamic Shariah:

Ibn Majah, Al-Daraqutni and Others:
It was related on the authority of Abu Sa'id Sa'd bin Malik bin Sinan al-Khudri (radiyallahu 'anhu) that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam) said:
"There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm."

Sahih Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 12 [also in Muslim (45), Ahmad (3/176), at-Tirmidhi (5215), Ibn Majah (66), an-Nasa'i (8/115), and Ibn Hibban (234)]:
Narrated Anas: The Prophet said, "None of you [truly] until he loves for his brother that which he loves for himself."

As I have displayed Muslim's are told to restrain there anger, respond to bad acts with good acts. That they should be kind and love there fellow brothers and sisters. And more importantly that oppression is not allowed in Islam. I have also demonstrated that the underlying theme found within the Shariah is that there should be no harming nor reciprocating of harm. And a beautiful message from the Prophet (PBUH) that no one truly believes unless he loves for his brother as he loves for himself. This demonstrates that Muslims should be kind loving people who do not show anger and only do good. That they do not oppress others. And above all not to beat people. These sources demonstrate enough that wife beating is prohibited in Islam but I will delve deeper providing unequivocal proof that wife beating is prohibited. Now I will directly address 'wife beating' providing clear evidences that it is haram in Islam.

Verses from the Quran condoning wife beating:

The Qur'an is the primary source of the Islamic Shariah(Laws on how Muslims should live there lives). The Quran describes the relationship between the two spouses in the followering verse:

“And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.” (Surah 30:21)

Here we learn that the relationship between the two spouses is one of love and mercy and tranquillity and peace.

Lets see what it says about treating Wives:

"....Do not retain them(i.e., your wives) to harm them..." ( Surah 2:231)

"And among God's signs is this: He created for you mates from amongst yourselves (males as mates for females and vice versa) that you might find tranquillity and peace in them. And he has put love and kindness among you. Herein surely are signs for those who reflect.” (The Noble Quran 30:21)

"...women of purity for men of purity. These are not affected by what people say. For them is forgiveness and an honorable provision.” (The Noble Quran 24:26)

"on the contrary live with them on a footing of kindness and equity. If ye take a dislike to them it may be that ye dislike a thing, and Allah brings about through it a great deal of good." (Surah 4:19)

These verses clearly state that you should treat your wives with kindness and equity. That you cannot harm them.

"If a wife fears cruelty or desertion on her husband's part, there is no blame on them if they arrange an amicable settlement between themselves; and such settlement is best; even though men's souls are swayed by greed. But if ye do good and practise self-restraint, Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do." (Surah 4:128)

This verse states that if a women fears cruelty then the spouses should try and sort it out between themselves. Then in Surah 4:130 its says if its doesn’t work out divorce is OK:

“But if they disagree (and must part), Allah will provide abundance for all from His all-reaching bounty: for Allah is He that careth for all and is Wise.” (Surah 4:130)

So if a women is not treated with kindness and is treated with cruelty they can get a divorce. The Qur'an clearly legislates that if a man beats his wife they can request a divorce.

As clearly shown from the Qur'an wife beating in Islam is haram. I could close the case on this now but I will prove further that Wife Beating is prohibited in Islam.

Verses from the Hadiths condoning wife beating:

The second source for the Islamic Shariah is the Sunnah of the prophet which is derived from Hadiths:

Abu Dawud, Book 11, Number 2138 [Graded hasan sahih by sheik al-abani]:
Narrated Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah: “I said: Apostle of Allah, how should we approach our wives and how should we leave them? He replied: Approach your tilth when or how you will, give her (your wife) food when you take food, clothe when you clothe yourself, do not revile her face, and do not beat her.”

Abu Dawud, Book 11, Number 2139 [Graded Sahih by sheik al-abani]:
Narrated Mu'awiyah al-Qushayri: “I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them.”

Here the prophet states that when asked how should we treat our wives? He replied feed them, cloth them, do not beat them, and be kind to them(do not revile them). Wife Beating is 100% refuted here.

Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 68:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Zam'a: The Prophet forbade laughing at a person who passes wind, and said, "How does anyone of you beat his wife as he beats the stallion camel and then he may embrace (sleep with) her?"

Here the prophet questions how people can beat there wives as they beat there camels. Showing a disgust towards wife beating.

Muslim, Book 009, Number 3526:
Fatima bint Qais reported that her husband divorced her with three, pronouncements and Allah's Messenger made no provision for her lodging and maintenance allowance. She (further said): Allah's Messenger said to me: When your period of 'Idda is over, inform me. So I informed him. (By that time) Mu'awiya, Abu Jahm and Usama b. Zaid had given her the proposal of marriage. Allah's Messenger said: So far as Mu'awiya is concerned, he is a poor man without any property. So far as Abu Jahm is concerned, he is a great beater of women, but Usama b. Zaid. she pointed with her hand (that she did not approve of the idea of marrying) Usama. But Allah's Messenger said: Obedience to Allah and obedience to His Messenger is better for thee. She said: So I married him, and I became an object of envy.

Muslim, Book 009, Number 3527:
Fatima bint Qais reported: My husband Abu 'Amr b. Hafs b. al-Mughira sent 'Ayyish b. Abu Rabi'a to me with a divorce, and he also sent through him five si's of dates and five si's of barley. I said: Is there no maintenance allowance for me but only this, and I cannot even spend my 'Idda period in your house? He said: No. She said: I dressed myself and came to Allah's Messenger. He said: How many pronouncements of divorce have been made for you? I said: Three. He said what he ('Ayyish b. Abu Rabi'a) had stated was true. There is no maintenance allowance for you. Spend 'Idda period in the house of your cousin, Ibn Umm Maktum. He is blind and you can put off your garment in his presence. And when you have spent your Idda period, you inform me. She said: Mu'awiya and Abu'l-Jahm were among those who had given me the proposal of marriage. Thereupon Allah's Apostle said: Mu'awiya is destitute and in poor condition and Abu'l-Jahm is very harsh with women (or he beats women), you should take Usama b. Zaid (as your husband).

In these two hadith's a women has recently got divorced and seeks a new husband. She has two candidates and asks the prophet for advice. One is poor and the other a "Wife beater". He tells her to marry another person. NOT the wife beater. Showing a negative viewpoint on wife beaters.

The prophet never beat or hit any of his wives. And as he is an example for Muslims we should follow the example he set of treating women kindly and not beating them or harming them.

Aaishah (Radhiallahu 'Anha) said: "Allaah's Messenger (Sallallahu 'Alaihi Wa Sallam) never hit anything with his hand ever, except when fighting in the path of Allaah. Nor did he ever hit a servant or a woman." [Recorded by Ibn Maajah. Al-Albaanee graded it Saheeh.]

Imam Ahmad recorded that `A'ishah said, "The Messenger of Allah never struck a servant of his with his hand, nor did he ever hit a woman. He never hit anything with his hand, except for when he was fighting Jihad in the cause of Allah. And he was never given the option between two things except that the most beloved of the two to him was the easiest of them, as long as it did not involve sin. If it did involve sin, then he stayed farther away from sin than any of the people. He would not avenge himself concerning anything that was done to him, except if the limits of Allah were transgressed. Then, in that case he would avenge for the sake of Allah.''

As Muslims we have to follow the example of the prophet (who never beat his wives!)

"You have indeed in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for him who hopes in Allah and the Last Day and who remember Allah much"(Surah Ahzab [33:21])

Abu Hurayra stated, "The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, 'The most perfect of believers in belief is the best of them in character. The best of you are those who are the best to their women.'" [at-Tirmidhi]

Hadith quoted in Imam Ghazzali's Ihya Ulum-Id-Din, Marriage section:
“The most perfect of believers in faith are those who are the finest in manners and most gentle toward their wives.”

“He is the most perfect Muslim whose disposition is best; and the best of you are they who behave best to their wives”

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "A believing man should not hate a believing woman. If he dislikes something in her character, he should be pleased with some other or another trait of hers." [Muslim]

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, "Treat women well. Woman was created from a rib. The most crooked part of the rib is the top part. If you try to straighten it, you will break it. If you leave it, it remains crooked. So treat women well." [Dont know source??]

“O People, it is true that you have certain rights with regard to your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under Allah’s trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Do treat your women well and be kind to them for they are your partners and committed helpers. ” the Prophet said in his last sermon. (Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1623, 1626, 636, Muslim: 98, Tirmidhi: 1628, 2046, 2085, Ahmed: 19774 )

Prophet Muhammad said : “The rights of women are sacred. See that women are maintained in the rights assigned to them”

Prophet Muhammad said : “Whoever doeth good to girls, it will be a curtain to him from hell-fire”

Prophet Muhammad said : “God enjoins you to treat women well, for they are your mothers, daughters, aunts.”

Finally this hadith condones anyone who beats people:
Sahih Muslim, Book 32, Number 6251:
Abu Huraira reported:
Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do you know who is poor? They (the Companions of the Holy Prophet) said: A poor man amongst us is one who has neither dirham with him nor wealth. He (the Holy Prophet) said: The poor of my Umma would be he who would come on the Day of Resurrection with prayers and fasts and Zakat but (he would find himself bankrupt on that day as he would have exhausted his funds of virtues) since he hurled abuses upon others, brought calumny against others and unlawfully consumed the wealth of others and shed the blood of others and beat others, and his virtues would be credited to the account of one (who suffered at his hand). And if his good deeds fall short to clear the account, then his sins would be entered in (his account) and he would be thrown in the Hell-Fire.

The list of Hadiths like these goes on and on. As I have shown from the Hadiths of the Prophet(PBUH) that wife beating is prohibited and condoned. That we should treat women and wives with kindness and love. Both the Qur'an and the Hadith's unequivocally prohibit beating women and wives. The Qur'an and the Hadith's prohibit treating women or wives unkindly and unjustly.

As I have demonstrated Wife beating Is Haram(Prohibited) in Islam.

Also i would like to mention the hadith you quoted from sunan Abu dawud book 11 hadith number 2142 "Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: The Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) said: A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife.  " It had been graded daif weak by sheik al-abani.
