Does the Quran say the Sun orbits the Earth?
[/size]

Many verses of the Quran speak about the orbit of the Sun. For example:

21:33

to top
21:33
Sahih International
And it is He who created the night and the day and the sun and the moon; all [heavenly bodies] in an orbit are swimming.
Muhsin Khan
And He it is Who has created the night and the day, and the sun and the moon, each in an orbit floating.

36:38

to top
36:38
Muhsin Khan
And the sun runs on its fixed course for a term (appointed). That is the Decree of the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing.
Yusuf Ali
And the sun runs his course for a period determined for him: that is the decree of (Him), the Exalted in Might, the All-Knowing.

None of the verses in the Quran state that the Sun orbits the Earth. All the Quranic verses simply detail two things:

1. That the Sun is moving.
2. That it has an orbit.

These two statements are what match with scientific facts.

Quote
The Sun is currently traveling through the Local Interstellar Cloud (near to the G-cloud) in the Local Bubble zone, within the inner rim of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way. Of the 50 nearest stellar systems within 17 light-years from Earth (the closest being a red dwarf named Proxima Centauri at approximately 4.2 light-years away), the Sun ranks fourth in mass. The Sun orbits the center of the Milky Way at a distance of approximately 24000–26000 light-years from the galactic center, completing one clockwise orbit, as viewed from the galactic north pole, in about 225–250 million years. [1]

Although many people quote these Quranic verses, they contain no references to the Sun orbiting the Earth.

If one wish to interpret it as all orbiting in same orbit surrounding earth. Then when hadith of eclipse was mentioned, wouldn't that mean sun and moon collided.

So for those who still interpret the verse as all orbiting in one orbit may actually refers to them orbiting the center of the Milky Way as a whole.

As'salamu Alaikum dear brother ThaMuslimGuy and all brothers and sisters here,

May Allah Almighty bless you for the hard work, dear brother.  Can I ask you and ask all brothers and sisters who post valuable articles here to also link the articles that you already posted in the "BOARD AMMOUNCEMENTS" section to their specific sections?  You're welcomed to double post if you'd like, but the minimum I ask is that you also link your article that you already created in the BOARD AMMOUNCEMENTS section, which will soon get burried under 4000+ other articles, to the other specific sections so that casual readers who navigate through the sections and their sub-sections can easily find your articles, insha'Allah.  Otherwise, I will have to do it manually myself, which will take a long time.

By the way, this will also help a lot in allowing for the internet's search engines to capture your articles more, insha'Allah.  I just hate to see valuable posts get buried in the BOARD AMMOUNCEMENTS section.

Take care,
Osama Abdallah

As'salamu Alaikum dear brothers and sisters,

The sun's and earth's orbits, and all other celestial bodies' orbits are detailed here:

Yes, the earth is also traveling in space, according to the Glorious Quran.  There are many Noble Words in the Glorious Quran that speak about the motion of earth in space: دحاها DAHAHA, كفاتا KIFAATA, تقوم TAQOOM, وضعها WADA'AHA, تمر TAMUR, مهادا MIHAADA, تزولا TAZOOL, تميد TAMEED.

Also, all celestial bodies, يعرجون Yaa'rujoon (traveling in orbits) in space.  Also other Arabic words عرج , عروج , معارج  and  معراج  that all refer to "going in an orbital and curvy path" in the Glorious Quran and our Islamic Texts.
