how do we view the names of prophets?
« on: July 02, 2017, 01:35:58 PM »
assalamu alaikum,

i just have a simple question, do we view the names in the quran given to the prophets as their true and original names, or do we take them to mean the arabic versions of their names and this is how the arabs knew them?

do we think that abrahams real and true name was ibrahim, and jacob yaqub, and joseph yusuf, and moses musa, and jesus isa

because historically people say abrahams real name was abram, and moses moshe etc.

so do we take the names of prophets literally as they were their original names, or do we interpret them to be the arabic version of their names, and by these names they were known in the place and time of the prophet Muhammad saws.

if the first option is chosen how do we reconcile moses with being moshe, abraham being abram, if the latter is chosen that these are the arabized versions of their name and that they were known by these names, why do we try to prove that jesus real name was Isa?

jazakallah khair

Hi sama, thanks for the reply, but that wasnt really what i was asking. I meant, in islam do we really believe the real name of moses was musa, and abraham was ibrahim, and jesus was isa, and enoch was idris and noah was nuh etc. Or do we say that these are the arabic version of their name, and this is how they were known in arabia t the time of Muhammad saws
