Can Jizyah be applied in the 21st century?

Assalamu alaikum dear brothers and sisters,

Please answer the question: Can Jizyah be applied in this 21st century? Add scholarly commentaries pls, I am confused. Your personal opinion will also be appreciated!

I view jizya as the equivalente of zakat but for non muslims.
