Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I've read the Al-Saud and Al-Wahab families wrested power from the Sheikh of Mecca and he was the one who was helped by the British through Lawrence of Arabia. The Meccan sheikh made a deal with the British during the first World War to fight against the Ottomans so that he may be able to make himself a "Khalifa" of the Muslims. The British took some time but they to some extent honoured their promise and made the three sons of that Sheikh rulers in Mecca, Iraq and (if I remember correctly) Jordan. The Meccan one was ousted by the Al-Saud, the Iraqi one by a nationalistic Iraqi uprising in the 1950s (from whom power was wrested by the CIA) and only the ones in Jordan apparently remained to rule the lands.

On the matter of Monarchies, I believe the opinions of those people is stronger who believe in the Qur'an verse of Amruhum Shura' Bainahum (and they resolve their issues with mutual consultation). Muslims have always had their most learned scholars of the times giving the most important religious or judicial rulings which was accepted through Ijma', why should such a concept not be considered when it comes to matters, some would argue, much more significant such as running the state affairs.

Both systems, monarchies and democracies, have their benefits and risks, but democratic systems appear to be a better choice. The regimes like those of the Shah of Iran or of Hosni Mubarak of Egypt are very clear examples of how democratic systems could have helped the people had they been given the choice. The only choice for those people was starting a revolution, it shouldn't be that difficult to get rid of rulers who are infamous all over the world for their corruption, persecution or torture of their subjects.

Regarding the monarchy point, just remember that aside from the Noble Verse that I gave above that clearly prohibits for humans to appoint themselves as kings, but I also want to remind you of the following:

1-  Abdul Rahman bin Abu Bakr, the son of the first Islamic Caliph, didn't become the Caliph after his father.

2-  Omar didn't appoint any son after him either.

3-  Uthman had Ali as his Wazeer (vice president).

4-  Ali on his death bed was asked about appointing Hasan after him.  He told his followers "I do not command you nor forbid you."

Monarchy is a lie.  It is forbidden in Islam, and the Muslims didn't practice it.  It wasn't until Muawiyah came and corrupted the entire Islamic ruling system.

The Prophet said, "There will emerge from the East (najd) some people who will recite the Qur'an but it will not exceed their throats and who will go out of (renounce) the religion (Islam) as an arrow passes through the game, and they will never come back to it unless the arrow, comes back to the middle of the bow (by itself) (i.e., impossible). The people asked, "What will their signs be?" He said, "Their sign will be the habit of shaving ( their heads).

Najd is Iraq?

When Prophet Muhammad blessed Yemen and Sham and REFUSED to bless the Najd, his Sahaba asked him WHAT ABOUT OUR NAJD, O Messenger of Allah.  They asked him three times to bless it and he refused.  He then said that the Horn of Satan will come out from it.

Were the Sahabas Iraqis?  Or was the Prophet in Iraq?  What does OUR NAJD mean to you?  Even if it geographically included some parts of Iraq, it still doesn't disqualify Saudi Arabia.  And besides, Iraq was back then known as Iraq to all people.  So he could've easily said Iraq and not Najd.  Najd back then was in Saudi Arabia, and this is why they asked him to bless "OUR NAJD".

An investigation into the documents by more than 100 media groups, described as one of the largest such probes in history, revealed on Sunday hidden offshore dealings in the assets of about 140 political figures - including 12 current or former heads of states.

The vast stash of records was obtained from an anonymous source by German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung and shared with media worldwide by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

Among 12 heads of state mentioned in the leak were King Salman of Saudi Arabia, former prime minister of Jordan Ali Abu al-Ragab, and two Qatari leaders - former prime minister Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani and Qatar's former emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
