Debates
« on: December 28, 2012, 05:37:15 PM »
Peace
I have some extra cash lying around i which I want to use it open up a debate hall and have some debates. By using this I want to accomplish 3 goals:
  • to have dialogue within the Islamic community
  • to show understanding for each others beliefs
  • to reach out and show that Islam is a wonderful and peaceful religion

It will have 2 kinds of debates:
  • Inter-Islamic debates
  • External-Islamic debates /li]
*note that names could be changes, im not satisfied with the names.

Inter islamic debates are some topics in which the muslim community is divided upon, i which we can bring our diverse ideas to the table and talk about them. It also features dialogue between the muslim sects. Topic included would be:
Is Islam compatible with secularism?
Does Islam allow modern pictures?
Is the beard compulsory?
Can a male and a female be friends Islamicly?
Is there such thing as "halal-dating"?
Is nationalism against Islam?
Does Islam call for a global caliphate?
Should the imams succeed the Prophet as the head of state?
Is the hadith reliable?
Can women wear pants? (believe it or not, some say yes, some say no)
Is chess Haram?
Which hadith is reliable?
can non-muslims vote in an islamic state?
Do new Muslims have to change their names?
Can females be leaders of a state?
Can Islam modernize?
can a Muslim pray in any language?
etc.

External-Islamic debates are debates against non-muslims accusations of Islam, topics included are:
Is Islam violent?
Is Islam more violent then other religions, specifically Judaism and Christianity? (I got the perfect man for the job for this one)
Does Islam issue the killing of apostates?
Is Islam against free speech?
Is Muhammad a true messenger of God? (this one includes many sub topics)
Did Islam improve Arab Civilization?
Can Muslim integrate into western civilization?
Do Islam command to fight unbelievers simply because they are unbelievers?
Does Islam sanction Honor-Killings?
Does Islam oppress women?
Is Islam racist?
Does Islam sanction Rape for female slaves?
etc.

Can you guys give me feedback ans answer these questions:
1. Can you guys recommend good debaters?
2. What other topics should be included?
3. What should the debate structure be?
4. What should be the rules?
5. What is the requirements of the debaters?
6. should it be 1 v 1 debates or group debates?
Also please voice your own opinions, recommendations, and considerations?

Im serious about this project, I've been thinking, about it for a while, gonna use the money to make these happen.
Thank you guys, remember this is a new project that could take years.
Thanks
peace

As'salamu Alaikum dear brother Zulfiqar,

I personally vote against the idea.  Debates are usually conducted in hotels, or churches, or mega halls (for popular debators).  I don't think you'll have much business, if any at all.  Think of the monthly and regular costs that you'll have to carry.  It will bankrupt you, akhi.

The idea itself, a hall for debates, is not feasible, because there are much better alternatives.  You have 5-star and even 6-star hotels competing against you.  Just about every hotel's lower level (basement level) is halls for companies and organizations.  And they provide excellent service.  Your hall won't be a match, dear brother.

I advise you against the idea.  What we need instead is an Islamic Center to sponsor debates, and to rent halls from hotels and banquets to have the debates.

I hope this helps, insha'Allah.

Take care,
Osama Abdallah
