The Thyroid Gland
(the "bird-shaped
gland inside the neck") is
precisely mentioned in the Glorious Quran and is confirmed by Science!
The sections of this article are:
1- Allah Almighty's Divine Claim. 2- The Scientific Proofs.
3- Conclusion. (must read!)
Note: Noble Verse
17:13 and the shape of the Thyroid Gland and it's
location being inside the neck were sent to me by brother Arthur K. (Ayyub); may Allah Almighty always be
pleased with him. His email is listed in Article #4 in the "Scientific
Proofs" main-section, below.

Allah Almighty's Divine Claim:
The Holy Quran and Islam are filled with scientific statements
and notions. These are statements of Allah Almighty describing how He created
things on earth and in the Universe. What's most amazing is that all of these
scientific statements and notions had been proven to be in
perfect
agreement with science and our modern-day scientific discoveries.
Allah Almighty made the Noble Quran be Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him)
Everlasting Divine Miracle and proof for Prophethood. The Holy Book certainly
stood the test of time 1,500 years ago with Its Claims, Prophecies and
Miraculous language eloquence, and it does again and again in our day today with
Its overwhelming agreement with science and discoveries that were not known to
man 1,500 years ago.
Allah Almighty Said:
"We will show them Our signs in the Universe
and inside their selves, until it will become quite
clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient as regards your Lord
that He is a witness over all things?
(The Noble Quran, 41:53)"
With this said, let us now look at the following Noble Verses from the Holy
Quran:
17:12
Arberry:
[017:012] We have appointed the night and the day as two signs; then We
have blotted out the sign of the night, and made the sign of the day to
see, and that you may seek bounty from your Lord, and that you may know
the number of the years, and the reckoning; and everything We have
distinguished very distinctly.
[017:013]
And every man -- We have
fastened to him
his birdof omen upon
inside his neck [1]; and We shall bring forth for him,
on the Day of Resurrection, a book he shall find spread wide open.
[1] - Allah Almighty Said
عنقه (his
throat) which is derived from
عنق, which means throat or the front
side of the neck. The Arabic word
عنق specifically means the throat or
the front side of the neck.
رقبة means neck,
and usually the back of the neck or the entire whole neck. The
front side of the neck is rarely called
رقبة. It is always referred to as
عنق. See the ample
proofs below from the Arabic dictionaries.
(See the Scientific Proofs
section below)
[017:014] 'Read thy book! Thy soul suffices thee this day as a reckoner
against thee.'
Let us examine the following four important key words:
طائره
and
في and
عنقه and
رقبة in good details:
6:38
ومامن دابة في الارض ولاطائر
يطير بجناحيه الا امم امثالكم مافرطنا في الكتاب من شئ ثم الى ربهم يحشرون
Arberry:
[006:038] No creature is there crawling on the earth, no
bird flying with its wings, but they are
nations like unto yourselves. We have neglected nothing in the Book;
then to their Lord they shall be mustered.
1- in
2- at
3- on
4- within
5- during
6- by
7- among
8- thereof
3- The Arabic word
عنقه means:
1- Throat.
2- The front side of the neck.
In Arabic, it is said:
1- قبض
عنقه he grabbed him by his throat, or grabbed his throat.
Google wrongly uses
"neck" instead of "throat" for this expression. However, it is
common knowledge that the grabbing of the neck is almost always done by grabbing
the front side of the neck, and it is usually during a
physical struggle. It is also used as a threatening gesture to
instill fear in an individual without going as far as physically beating him up.
2- حز
عنقه means he slit or cut his or its throat. Again,
Google wrongly uses "neck" instead of "throat" in this one as well. However, it is also
a common knowledge that the cutting of the neck starts
from the front side and not the back side.
4- The Arabic word
رقبة means:
1- The entire neck.
2- The back of the neck.
Google uses "neck" for both
رقبةand
عنق, which is inaccurate.
The first one means "neck", and the latter
one means "throat or the front side of the neck".

The Scientific Proofs:
Let us look at what the bird-shaped gland inside the neck looks like, and
what is it responsible for:
The
thyroid is a gland located
in the neck. It is a part of the
endocrine (hormone)
system, and plays a major
role in
regulating the body's
metabolism. If a
sample of cells is needed
from the thyroid
gland a fine needle biopsy
can be
performed. During this
procedure, a
skinny needle is inserted
into the thyroid
gland, and a sample of
thyroid cells and
fluid is drawn into the
needle. The needle
is then withdrawn and the
cells are sent
for examination. This test
is usually
performed to diagnose
thyroid disease
or thyroid cancer.
The
thyroid gland controls how quickly the body uses energy, makes
proteins, and
controls how sensitive the body should be to other
hormones.
It participates in these processes by producing thyroid hormones, the
principal ones being
triiodothyronine
(T3) and
thyroxine (T4).
These hormones regulate the
rate of metabolism
and affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the
body. T3 and T4 are synthesized from both
iodine and
tyrosine. The
thyroid also produces
calcitonin, which
plays a role in
calcium homeostasis.
The thyroid gets its name from the Greek word
for "shield", after the shape of the related thyroid cartilage. The most
common problems of the thyroid gland consist of an overactive thyroid
gland, referred to as
hyperthyroidism,
and an underactive thyroid gland, referred to as
hypothyroidism.
.....................
The thyroid gland
is a butterfly-shaped
organ and is composed of
two cone-like lobes or wings, lobus dexter (right lobe) and
lobus sinister (left lobe),
connected via the
isthmus. The organ is
situated on the anterior side of the neck, lying against and around the
larynx and
trachea, reaching
posteriorly the
oesophagus and
carotid sheath. It starts
cranially at the oblique line on the
thyroid cartilage (just
below the laryngeal prominence, or 'Adam's
Apple'), and extends inferiorly to
approximately the fifth or sixth
tracheal ring.[1]
It is difficult to demarcate the gland's upper and lower border with vertebral
levels because it moves position in relation to these during swallowing.
.....................
Cells of
the developing brain are a major target for the thyroid hormones
T3 and T4.
Thyroid hormones play a particularly crucial role in brain maturation during
fetal development.[26]"
The thyroid gland, a part of
the
endocrine (hormone) system,
plays a
major role in regulating the
body's
metabolism.

Brother Ayyub's Notes:
Assalamu Alaykum, Dear Brothers!
My name is Ayyub, I am from Chechnya.
First of all I would like to thank You for
running this website for it is of paramount
importance for all of us!
I frequently visit it and cannot help
admiring how clearly and confidently you
defend the Noble Quran and Sunnah!
My major interest is the issue concerning
Scientific Miracles in Quran.
Unfortunately I do not know the Arabic
language which is crucial for understanding
the Noble Quran. While reading Quran I got
interested in the Verse 17:13 wherein it
reads:
In the English translation (by Muhammad
Muhsin Khan) it reads as follows:
“And We have
fastened every man's deeds to his neck, and
on the Day of Resurrection, We shall bring
out for him a book which he will find wide
open.” (17:13)
However, the English translation fails to
mention the “tairahu” – the bird!
It came to my mind that the “bird” attached
to human neck could be the thyroid gland
since it looks like bird or rather
butterfly.
I know little about this gland except it
plays an important role in metabolism and
hormones of human body. Maybe, apart from
metabolism, it deals with (or affects)
information about human deeds, emotions,
intentions etc. Anyway, my vision is purely
hypothetical. An Allah knows best!
Assalamu alaykum!
Your brother Ayyub

Conclusion:
Again, the Noble Quran is filled with scientific statements and notions.
These are statements of Allah Almighty describing how He created things on earth
and in the Universe. What's most amazing is that all of these scientific
statements and notions had been proven to be in
perfect
agreement with science and our modern-day scientific discoveries.
Allah Almighty made the Noble Quran be Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him)
Everlasting Divine Miracle and proof for Prophethood. The Holy Book certainly
stood the test of time 1,500 years ago with Its Claims, Prophecies and

and inside their selves, until it will become quite
clear to them that it is the truth. Is it not sufficient as regards your Lord

(The Noble Quran, 41:53)"
We have seen how Allah Almighty's Statement:
وكل انسان الزمناه طائره
في عنقه
(And every man -- We have fastened to him
his bird
inside his neck) is in perfect harmony with Science. The
Thyroid Gland does indeed resemble the shape of a bird with wings,
and it is also located in the
عنق (front side of the neck).
Not only that, but this gland is also responsible for controlling:
1- How quickly the body uses energy.
2- The body's sensitivity to other hormones.
3- It makes proteins.
4-
Plays an important role in brain development.
All of this seems to point
to the the behavior of the individual and the evil and good choices and
decisions that he/she commits in life. Notice in the very next Noble
Verse how Allah Almighty Says:
1-
اقرا كتابك كفى بنفسك اليوم عليك حسيبا
('Read thy book! Thy soul suffices thee this day as a reckoner
against thee.' ).
نفسك
in Arabic literally means "your self".
Here Allah Almighty is telling the evil doer that he has only himself to
blame for his evil deeds.
Indeed, all Praise and Glory are due to Allah Almighty alone for making
the Noble Quran be the Perfect and Everlasting Miracle, for us humans, out
of all of His Divine Miracles! And may Allah Almighty send His Peace, Mercy
and Blessings upon our Beloved and Blessed Prophet, Teacher and Role Model,
Muhammad. Ameen.
