What does the Quran say about adopting orphans? What is their status in the family? Do Orphans inherit from their adopted families?
I first would like the reader to know that this website contains 10s (tens) of articles that covered the Rights of Orphans in Islam. They can be all viewed here. Also, here is a list of the Noble Verses that deal with the Orphans, and how they are to be treated with care and kindness and respect, and to be cared for, and for Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") to protect their money until they grow up. However, this brief article will show what the Orphans would be like in the family if they get sponsored or adopted by the family:
Noble Verse(s) 2:220
[002:220] (Their bearings) on this life and the Hereafter. They ask thee concerning orphans. Say: "The best thing to do is what is for their good; if ye mix their affairs with yours, they are your brethren; but God knows the man who means mischief from the man who means good. And if God had wished, He could have put you into difficulties: He is indeed Exalted in Power, Wise."
Noble Verse(s) 33:5
[033:005] Call them by (the names of) their fathers: that is juster in the sight of God. But if ye know not their father's (names, call them) your Brothers in faith, or your maulas. But there is no blame on you if ye make a mistake therein: (what counts is) the intention of your hearts: and God is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful.
An orphan is still a stranger. He does not inherit, except from his deceased biological parents. He is not a biological brother or sister to his adopted family. They are to carry their biological fathers' last names, and not carry the adopting families' last names. But nonetheless, the Orphan is to be treated as a member of the family with dignity, honor and respect. The following Noble Verses are only a small example from the many other Noble Verses that deal with the Rights of Orphans in Islam. Again, here is a list of the Noble Verses that deal with the Orphans, and how they are to be treated with care and kindness and respect, and to be cared for, and for Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") to protect their money until they grow up.
The following Noble Verses, from among many others, emphasize on treating the orphans with honor and dignity and respect:
Noble Verse(s) 89:15-89:25
[089:015] Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me."[089:016] But when He trieth him, restricting his subsistence for him, then saith he (in despair), "My Lord hath humiliated me!"
[089:017] Nay, nay! but ye honour not the orphans![089:018] Nor do ye encourage one another to feed the poor!-
[089:019] And ye devour inheritance - all with greed,[089:020] And ye love wealth with inordinate love!
[089:021] Nay! When the earth is pounded to powder,[089:022] And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank,
[089:023] And Hell, that Day, is brought (face to face),- on that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance profit him?[089:024] He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!"
[089:025] For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict,
Also, the adopting parent can still write a will to give to whomever he wishes for up to 1/3 (one third) of his/her wealth. So an orphan child, who perhaps has been raised with the family for much of his life, can still be part of the inheritance through a special portion that the parent would have to allocate for him/her in their will. And like I said, it could be up to a 1/3 of the entire wealth.

Allah Almighty in the following Noble Verses, and in many others like them, commands the Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") to give a share from the inheritance to the orphans and relatives as well to keep the family ties and love, and the good and generous spirit strong, and to speak to them words of kindness and justice:
Noble Verse(s) 4:7-4:10
[004:007] From what is left by parents and those nearest related there is a share for men and a share for women, whether the property be small or large,-a determinate share.[004:008] But if at the time of division other relatives, or orphans or poor, are present, feed them out of the (property), and speak to them words of kindness and justice.
[004:009] Let those (disposing of an estate) have the same fear in their minds as they would have for their own if they had left a helpless family behind: Let them fear God, and speak words of appropriate (comfort).[004:010] Those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, eat up a Fire into their own bodies: They will soon be enduring a Blazing Fire!
