Is wife beating allowed in the Bible?
The sections of this article are:
1- Women and the authority of men, upon them, in the Bible.
2- Jesus surely witnessed wife-beating and never condemned it.
(a)- What about the love your wife, love your enemy, and turn the other cheek rules?
(i)- Hosea 3:1 clearly proves that wife-beating is allowed!
3- If the country's law prohibits wife-beating, then Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") are forbidden from doing it.
(a)- In the Glorious
Quran.
(b)- In the Bible.
(i)- Paul is known to say absurd things.
4- Conclusion.
1- Women and the authority of men, upon them, in the Bibles:
First of all, as I mentioned above, the Bible allows beating of people who commit wrong acts, and the fools:
1- The Concept of Beating in the Bibles:
"Young people take pride in their strength, but the gray hairs of wisdom are even more beautiful. A severe beating can knock all of the evil out of you! (From the Contemporary English Version (CEV) Bible, Proverbs 20:29-30)"
"Hatred stirs up trouble; love overlooks the wrongs that others do. If you have good sense, it will show when you speak. But if you are stupid, you will be beaten with a stick. If you have good sense, you will learn all you can, but foolish talk will soon destroy you. (From the Contemporary English Version (CEV) Bible, Proverbs 10:12-14)"
"A curse you don’t deserve will take wings and fly away like a sparrow or a swallow. Horses and donkeys must be beaten and bridled— and so must fools. Don’t make a fool of yourself by answering a fool. (From the Contemporary English Version (CEV) Bible, Proverbs 26:2-4)"
Again, beating here is open for anyone who is deemed to have evil in them, and/or is acting stupid and is a fool. The Bible doesn't object to the concepts of beating and disciplining of any individual who is in the wrong, and who is deemed to be deserving to it.
2- Parables about Beating:
"Athletes work hard to win a crown that cannot last, but we do it for a crown that will last forever. I don’t run without a goal. And I don’t box by beating my fists in the air. I keep my body under control and make it my slave, so I won’t lose out after telling the good news to others. (From the Contemporary English Version (CEV) Bible, 1 Corinthians 9:25-27)"
"If that happens, the master will come on a day and at a time when the servant least expects him. That servant will then be punished and thrown out with the servants who cannot be trusted. If servants are not ready or willing to do what their master wants them to do, they will be beaten hard. But servants who don’t know what their master wants them to do will not be beaten so hard for doing wrong. If God has been generous with you, he will expect you to serve him well. But if he has been more than generous, he will expect you to serve him even better. (From the Contemporary English Version (CEV) Bible, Luke 12:46-48)"
Even though these are parables, but notice that beating was a norm in the society. Yet, never was it directly condemned, especially on wives!. Not only that, but we find the beatings being ok even in parables in the Bible.
Also, there are many verses in the Bible that put women under the authority and judgment of men:
1- Man is clearly the ruler and the lord of the woman:
Genesis 3:16 "To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.""
Now the Bible allows for rulers and kings to not only punish whom they please, but to even kill whom they please. I've written a big article on this where King David, for instance, killed a messenger for a mere message. Yet, David is a blessed person by GOD Almighty in the Bible.
I am not saying that a husband is allowed to kill his wife if she defies or reviles him. But certainly, him being her ruler gives him a great deal of power and authority over her. So why should he be forbidden from disciplining her if she gets out of line?
Furthermore, the New Testament also said:
1 Corinthians 11:3 "Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God."
"the head of" means
The master.
Lord.
One who has authority over.
One who is responsible for.
1 Corinthians 11:6-7
6 If a woman does not cover her head, she should
have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her
hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head.
7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God;
but the woman is the glory of man."
2- Only the daughter could be sold by her father to
slavery:
Exodus 21:7-8 "And in case a man should sell his daughter as a slave girl, she will not go out in the way that the slave men go out. If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master so that he doesn't designate her as a concubine but causes her to be redeemed, he will not be entitled to sell her to a foreign people in his treacherously dealing with her."
3- The man is allowed to cut the woman's hands if she defends her husband in the wrong way:
Deuteronomy 25:11-12 "And in case men struggle together (in a fight) with one another, and the wife of the one has come near to deliver her husband out of the striking one (to save her husband), and she has thrust out her hand and grabbed hold of his private (the other man's groin), she must then get both her hands cut off, and the eyes of the men must feel no sorrow."
4- The New Testament considers women as filth that defiles men:
Revelation 14:4 "Those are those (men) who did not defile themselves with women, for they kept themselves pure. They follow the Lamb wherever he goes. They were purchased from among men and offered as first fruits to God and the Lamb."
Note: Christians, again, lie on this one and claim that the verse is referring to prostitutes. That is not what the verse says even if we assume that it meant that. The fact that it used "women", which includes all females, definitely means that the intent here was to degrade women! You can lie and argue endlessly about this, but the verse its very clear. The Bible addresses prostitutes in 100s (literally) of verses throughout the Old and New Testaments. The verses are countless. Yet, in this one, the word women was chosen. It didn't even say bad women. No, it just said women. It clearly refers to the other verses of the Bible where the woman (Eve) was blamed for kicking mankind out of Heaven. Allah Almighty in the Glorious Quran, on the other hand, blamed both Adam and Eve, and not just Eve.
5- The daughter would get burnt alive with fire:
Leviticus 21:9 "And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire."
There are many many other verses that I could dig up and provide, but these should be sufficient enough to prove that men have full authority over women in the Bible.

Quran vs Bible on beating women: Bible allowing to beat and kill a disobedient child! It's ironic how Christians bring up, Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") men can beat their wives, when in reality they dismiss their very own bible which states, a father is allowed to beat and kill his disobedient child. Do not withhold discipline from a child; although you strike him with a rod, he will not die. Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. (proverbs 23:13-14) Bible says kill women not only beat them Kill Women Who Are Not Virgins On Their Wedding Night: (Deuteronomy 22:20-21) Kill Men, Women, and Children: (Ezekiel 9:5-7) Kill Old Men and Young Women: (Jeremiah 51:20-26) The Concept of Beating women in the Bibles: "Young people take pride in their strength, but the gray hairs of wisdom are even more beautiful. As harsh as it may seem this is the reality of the Bible. The God of the Bible sanctions beating and killing one's own child, purely for disobeying him Remember 100 women are killed annually today in developed countries like France and the US as official statestics reveal

Now Islamically speaking: Now coming to the idea of Islam allowing wife beating. This is not true. Islam does not allow wife beating, rather in Islam a husband must love and look after his wife and children. Narrated Mu'awiyah al-Qushayri: "I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and do not beat them, and do not revile them. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2139)" Narrated Mu'awiyah ibn Haydah: "I said: Apostle of Allah, how should we approach our wives and how should we leave them? He replied: Approach your tilth when or how you will, give her (your wife) food when you take food, clothe when you clothe yourself, do not revile her face, and do not beat her. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2138)" So act kindly towards women. (Translation of Sahih Muslim, The Book of Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Book 008, Number 3468)" Always remember:
and do not beat them, and do
not revile them. Aisha reported that Allah's Messenger, may Allah bless him, never beat anyone with his hand, neither a woman nor a servant, but only, in the case when he had been fighting in the cause of Allah …” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 4296)
Tafsir Ibn Kathir, chapter
68: Allah Subhanahu wa taala describes Prophet Muhammed Peace be upon him in the Quran as the best of character. Narrated Mu'awiyah al-Qushayri: "I went to the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) and asked him: What do you say (command) about our wives? He replied: Give them food what you have for yourself, and clothe them by which you clothe yourself, and 🏼do not beat them, and do not revile them. (Sunan Abu-Dawud, Book 11, Marriage (Kitab Al-Nikah), Number 2139)" Stop it "Do not Beat Your Wife" (Noble Quran & Prophet of Islam-Peace be upon him) "...Do not retain them (i.e., your wives) to harm them...(The Noble Quran, 2:231)"
The law of beating: Now Correct Context and translation of Quran 4:34 based upon above verses and true meaning of Word "Adriboo (root: daraba): to separate, to part, or to strike" This religion that forbids to harm even a cat how could it say beat a woman Beat (daraba ) in Arabic language also means to separate and ignore someone too As in Lisan Al Arab dictionary (4:34) [...]as for those women whose animosity or ill-will you have reason to fear, then leave them alone in bed, and then separate; and if thereupon they pay you heed, do not seek a way against them. Adriboo (root: daraba): to separate, to part, or to strike. In the context of the above verse the most appropriate meaning for nushuz is 'marital discord' (ill-will, animosity etc), and for adriboo is 'to separate' or 'to part'. "O ye who believe! When ye go abroad (darabtum) In the cause of Allah, Investigate carefully, And say not to anyone Who offers you a salutation: 'Thou art none of a Believer!' Coveting the perishable good Of this life: with Allah Are profits and spoils abundant. Even thus were ye yourselves Before, till Allah conferred On you His favours: therefore Carefully investigate. For Allah is well aware Of all that ye do. (The Noble Quran, 4:94)" So "daraba" literally means "beat", or "go abroad", or "give" but not in the sense to give something by hand, but rather to give or provide an example. Important Note: Notice how Allah Almighty in Noble Chapter (Surah) 4 He used "daraba (4:34" and "darabtum (4:94)", which are both derived from the same root. He used both words in the same Chapter, which tells me that "daraba" in Noble Verse 4:34 means to desert or leave but not beat, since that's what its derived word meant in Noble Verse 4:94. "...Do not retain them (i.e., your wives) to harm them...(The Noble Quran, 2:231)

2- Jesus surely witnessed wife-beating and never condemned it!
Like in every society, there are always those people who are short-tempered and violent. In fact, the Bible gave certain punishments for beating certain people:
Exodus 21
14 But if a man schemes and kills another man
deliberately, take him away from my altar and put him to death.
15 "Anyone who attacks his father or his mother must be put to
death.
16 "Anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has
him when he is caught must be put to death.
17 "Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.
18 "If men quarrel and one hits the other with a stone or with his
fist [a] and he does not die but is confined to bed,
19 the one who struck the blow will not be held responsible if the other gets up
and walks around outside with his staff; however, he must pay the injured man
for the loss of his time and see that he is completely healed.
20 "If a man beats his male or female slave with a rod and the
slave dies as a direct result, he must be punished,
21 but he is not to be punished if the slave gets up after a day or two, since
the slave is his property.
22 "If men who are fighting hit a pregnant woman and she gives
birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined
whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows.
23 But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life,
24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,
25 burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.
26 "If a man hits a manservant or maidservant in the eye and
destroys it, he must let the servant go free to compensate for the eye.
27 And if he knocks out the tooth of a manservant or maidservant, he must let
the servant go free to compensate for the tooth.
Numbers 35
18 Or if anyone has a wooden object in his hand
that could kill, and he hits someone so that he dies, he is a
murderer; the murderer shall be put to death.
..........
21 or if in hostility he hits him with his fist so that he dies,
that person shall be put to death; he is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall
put the murderer to death when he meets him.
Deuteronomy 19
5 For instance, a man may go into the forest with his neighbor to cut
wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, the head may fly off
and hit his neighbor and kill him. That man may flee to one of these
cities and save his life.
The Bible went into many details about many of the hitting scenarios. It even went as far as giving a hypothetical example of a neighbor accidently causing for a tree to fall on his neighbor. Yet,
Never once did the Bible condemn the beating of wives despite the fact that the book has verses on beatings! Why is that?
In fact, if a man rapes a single girl, which is technically a physical beating and a rape, then his punishment is to marry her:
"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. (From the NIV Bible, Deuteronomy 22:28)"
I simply do not see where the Bible truly prohibits wife-beating. It seems clear to me that the Bible looks at the woman as someone who belongs only to her husband and that it is none of anyone's business to know or to care about what really goes on between them. So whether the husband beats his wife or not, it really doesn't matter. This is how I honestly see the Bible's view toward the wife. I am not saying that the Bible encourages wife-beating. But certainly, the Bible
Just doesn't care at all about it.
Also, Jesus has definitely seen or heard of wife-beating incidents throughout his life in the society that he lived in. I mean, I find it virtually impossible for a hard-headed society that he lived among, who were full of defiance and stubbornness, to not have wife-beating in it. So, Jesus' silence about it also proves that
Jesus too didn't really care at all about it, or gave it much thought.
(a)- What about the love your wife, love your enemy and turn the other cheek rules?
Let us look at the following verses from the Bibles:
Luke 6
34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect
repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,'
expecting to be repaid in full.
35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them
without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you
will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked.
36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6
28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who
mistreat you.
29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also.
If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic.
30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do
not demand it back.
But there is a limit to forgiveness:
Matthew 18
21 Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord,
how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to
seven times?"
22 Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times,
but seventy-seven times.
23 "Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle
accounts with his servants.
A bad wife could run out of the 77 times in a matter of days or weeks.
Also again, the Concept of Beating in the Bibles:
Beating here is open for anyone who is deemed to have evil in them, and/or is acting stupid and is a fool. The Bible doesn't object to the concepts of beating and disciplining of any individual who is in the wrong, and who is deemed to be deserving to it.
We also read:
Ephesians 5
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved
the church and gave himself up for her.
.......
32 This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about
Christ and the church.
33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and
the wife must respect her husband.
Christian men are expected to love their wives as they love themselves, and Christian women are expected to respect their husbands. But what if the wife does not respect nor honor her husband? What if she is an unbearable person? Full of foul words? Stubborn? Disrespectful and defiant to her master and head, her husband?
Yes, the man is expected to be merciful as GOD Almighty is Merciful, and to love his enemies and to do good to them, but what if the wife becomes such an enemy that she is too harmful to the man, his dignity and to their children? What if she doesn't want to take care of the children, nor to feed them? What if she continuously defies the social traditions? What if she constantly insult him and belittle him in front of people? What if she doesn't treat him as her "head"?
Furthermore, we read:
Hosea 3
1 The LORD said to me, "Go, show your love to your wife
again, though she is loved by another and is an adulteress.
Love her as the LORD loves the Israelites, though they turn to other
gods and love the sacred raisin cakes."
This verse clearly and indisputably proves that wife-beating to the extremely defiant and disobedient women is allowed, for the following reasons:
1- If one were to love his wife as GOD Almighty loved the Israelites, then this means that he can even beat the day lights out of her every time she defies him, or every time she does something foolish or outrageous. How many, many times did GOD Almighty annihilate the Israelites, as a punishment for them, and caused for their children's heads to be dashed, and their women's pregnant tummies to get ripped open, and for their men to be killed, and for their towns to be utterly destroyed, and for them to be scattered all over the lands, by their enemies, because they defied GOD Almighty?
2- Yes husband, you must be
with your wife! But, if she does get waaaayyyy out of line with you, as the Israelites got way out of line with GOD Almighty, then you are permitted to treat her as GOD Almighty treated the Israelites - to punish her! And GOD Almighty annihilated the Israelites when He, the Almighty, decided to go against them.
3- If the country's law prohibits wife-beating, then Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") are forbidden from doing it:
What does the Glorious Quran Say about following the current laws of the country?
Allah Almighty Said:
Noble Verse(s) 4:59 |
Yusuf
Ali: [004:059] O ye who believe! Obey God, and obey the Apostle, and those charged with authority among you. If ye differ in anything among yourselves, refer it to God and His Apostle, if ye do believe in God and the Last Day: That is best, and most suitable for final determination. Arabic (from right to left): 4:59 ياايها الذين امنوا اطيعوا الله واطيعوا الرسول واولي الامر منكم فان تنازعتم في شئ فردوه الى الله والرسول ان كنتم تؤمنون بالله واليوم الاخر ذلك خير واحسن تاويلا |
As a Muslim, I am obligated to follow the law of the country that I am living with my free will in. If the speed limit of the road says 45mph (miles per hour), then according to the Glorious Quran, I am obligated by Allah Almighty Himself to follow this law and to honor it and respect it. The same goes for all other rules including domestic violence and others.
Furthermore, Allah Almighty also Said:
Noble Verse(s) 2:286 |
Yusuf
Ali: [002:286] On no soul doth God Place a burden greater than it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns. (Pray:) "Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget or fall into error; our Lord! Lay not on us a burden Like that which Thou didst lay on those before us; Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden greater than we have strength to bear. Blot out our sins, and grant us forgiveness. Have mercy on us. Thou art our Protector; Help us against those who stand against faith." Arabic (from right to left): 2:286 لايكلف الله نفسا الا وسعها لها ماكسبت وعليها مااكتسبت ربنا لاتؤاخذنا ان نسينا او اخطانا ربنا ولاتحمل علينا اصرا كما حملته على الذين من قبلنا ربنا ولاتحملنا مالاطاقة لنا به واعف عنا واغفر لنا وارحمنا انت مولانا فانصرنا على القوم الكافرين |
Noble Verse(s) 2:195 |
Dr. Munir
Munshey (one of
www.answering-christianity.com's authors): [002:195] Spend your wealth for the cause of Allah. Do not, by your own doings, put yourself in harm’s way. Do the right thing. Of course, Allah loves the righteous. Arabic (from right to left): 2:195 وانفقوا في سبيل الله ولاتلقوا بايديكم الى التهلكة واحسنوا ان الله يحب المحسنين |
A Muslim is not only not obligated to violate the law, but he is strictly forbidden from violating it, because:
1- He/she will not be able to bear the consequences of going to jail and losing much of his life, career and wealth through disobeying the law in anything, in general.
2- He/she is forbidden from putting him/herself in harm's way.
Furthermore, Allah Almighty also Said:
Noble Verse(s) 2:173 |
Yusuf
Ali: [002:173] He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of God. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For God is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful. Arabic (from right to left): 2:173 انما حرم عليكم الميتة والدم ولحم الخنزير ومااهل به لغير الله فمن اضطر غير باغ ولاعاد فلا اثم عليه ان الله غفور رحيم |
A Muslim is permitted to nullify the Law of Allah Almighty if there is a legitimate reason for it. In our case here, if a certain law of the country goes against a certain Law in the Glorious Quran, then as Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") we are permitted and obligated to follow the country's law, not the Glorious Quran's.
4- Conclusion:
It is clear that the Bible has harsh physical punishments for wives and others, and it does command it. However, the Bible also did command kindness, humbleness and mercy to all people. The Bible also commanded the same to the wives. The Bible limited the forgiveness to 77 times. A bad wife could go through all of them in a matter of days, weeks or months. But however, the command for the husband to love his wife as GOD Almighty loved Israel (Hosea 3:1) and/or Jesus loved the Church (Ephesians 5:25, 5:32-33) only proves that wife-beating is permitted for the women who are defiant, disobedient, belittling to their "heads" and "masters" (their husbands), and stubborn, because GOD Almighty, while He Loved the people of Israel, He also annihilated them many times in the past. Jesus also existed in a society that had both polygamy and wife-beating in it, and he never condemned any of them.
Allah Almighty Commanded the Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") to follow the laws of the lands that they live in. Therefore, if the law prohibits wife-beating, then the husband is forbidden to beat his wife, regardless whether he believes that wife-beating is allowed in Islam or not. I discussed the Quran-Law of allowing not allowing cases in this link.
The
Law of Wife Beating: Wife beating anytime and for any reason is never allowed in both Islam and the Bible. There is however a condition in Noble Verse 4:34 where Allah Almighty allows the husband to beat his wife after the second warning, and that is after he gives her two warnings to stop showing ill-conduct and disloyalty toward him. There is, however, an opening for interpretation of the word "beat" in the Noble Verse, because the Noble Word could also literally mean "leave". To avoid the slightest compromise to Islam, and to be in the best fairness I can be in, I have written two articles above regarding this matter and supported the two different meanings with solid proofs from the Glorious Quran and Hadiths.
Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") permitted to not follow Quran's Law: Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name. Sons and daughters titles will be "no more") don't necessarily have to resort to violence after the second warning if they choose to "leave", especially in countries where beating is considered a crime. Not only Allah Almighty forbade Muslims (Isaiah 56:5: Muslim is the future believers' name.
